I'm writing this sitting in an airport on the way to work. I work abroad regularly. I will be away for Christmas and New Year, so Merry Christmas and Happy New year to all of you here.

I've been thinking about the means by which I can develop my own brand of electronic anti chatter system.
I have run out of inputs on the vfd I'm using so I can't do as AvE did and programme one to ramp the speed up and down.
My thoughts have run like this. Whatever speed the machine is running at, ie whatever the output frequency is, I want to ramp that up and down, say 10%, either way. In order to do that it is necessary to know what the current frequency is.
There is an analogue output on the vfd that can be programmed to give a 0-10 V output analogous to one of a number of parameters, including frequency.
So by using an Arduino microcontroller I can read this voltage and divine frequency. I can then generate a voltage that varies up and down by the required amount using one if the Arduino's analogue outputs. This voltage is then summed with the output if the potentiometer controlling frequency (speed) and fed into the vfd control terminal.
The anti chatter voltage could also be made to vary in a pseudo random fashion using the Arduino.

Not an update on my VFD project, but I saw something at work today that I thought would interest other members, especially as this is primarily a mig welding forum.
These units are being used on the ship I'm working on. They hook up to a standard stick welding inverter Psu and an argon supply to turn it into a mig welder.

I'm here for a while then home. To be honest, being in a dry dock aboard ship it doesn't matter where you are. You don't get to see the locality so for practical purposes could be anywhere.

Today Friend Alan sent me some details about a clutch modification for the Harrison M250. It's a clutch mechanism similar to the one on something like a Harrison 140.
It is in the form of two magazine pieces. Alan very kindly took photos of the pages and sent them to me as his scanner is playing up.
From what I've seen so far it appears to be a cone clutch in basis. It looks good, so after I've done the Vfd I might have to have a go at it.

No practical updates as yet as I'm still away working. That said, I've come to a decision regarding the motor mounting.
I was going to go with the rubber anti vibrational mounts like the single phase motor had. You know that I machined the bars for them.
I've now seen a lot of evidence the three phase machines didn't have them. So I'm just going to bolt the motor direct to.the mounting plate as per the three phase originals.
As for the new rubber mountings I shall keep them in case I ever need to revert to single phase.

Back working on the vfd project. Removed the old control panel from the lathe this afternoon. Took out the redundant wiring for the old motor and fitted the conduit and right angle gland to the new motor.
The new motor got some new cable for the 3 phases and earth.

Couple of things,
The earth wire would be better in Green/Yellow or at least sleeved/taped to show it's an earth wire.
The 2 thin blue wires are probably at temperature monitor and can be fed back to the VFD to shut it down if the motor overheats.

The earth wire will be sleeved at the opposite end. The small connector block is for an anti condensation heater.
