pretty standard price. a little homework and they wouldnt have needed to ask for a breakdown.
I bill 80 for removal and the same again for refitting of hobs etc. worst case if my plumbers cant get to me in my timeframe im covered if someone else is more expensive.

I'll add you to a whatsapp group with my mate whos a plumber, he will soon change your mind. I often get pics of him kneeling into a pipe scraping jobby out of it with a trowel, up to his elbows in it, or the one where he was sploshing around in a single mothers toilet at 11pm that was full of jobby and used toilet paper because the kid had jammed his action man in the trap. I like to text back pics of me drinking tea in the office, but it doesn't have the same effect.

Been there, I’m not soft workshop monkey, anything to put steam on the table is my motto and a bit of poop is nothing compared to working on equipment in a hospital laundry or bio hazard waste incinerator. That is the smell of death and some messed up sights
I’ve rebuilt gearboxes from animal pulverising machines, the mush gets inside and rots with the heat.
That’s pretty rough!

did you shop around for parts prices? I only buy odds and sods but the local plumb base give be 50%+ discount on pretty much everything... just because they know my face... plumber will get at least that much? (some things are 80%)

Hi, You raise an interesting point not directly related to this thread. Does anyone pass on all or some trade discounts to customers? I had a workmate (not motor trade job) ask me to get him a set of brake pads using my discount from the motor factors. We ended up having quite a discussion with me saying that it's my discount, for being a long and regular customer, not his and him not being able to grasp the concept. The more he argued the less likely it was going to happen

Depends on the customer.

Bathrooms I try and make on the suite and tiles to cover unforeseen circumstances.

Good customers that keep coming back get billed at cost for materials + my time collecting etc il make my money from the repeat buisiness.
Kitchens are so expensive its in my interests to offer at cost to get the jobs. Il make elsewhere.

Generally I round up. So if the timbers gonna cost 42 quid it's billed at 50 gives me a little leeway

How many people just see the time in a job and forget about the cost off all the analysing and test kit, insurance costs ongoing costs of trade registrations.

If you just have a van and a bit of insurance it is gross wages near enough. Ive got all the insurance, vehicles and a equipment in the hundreds of thousands of pounds worth and a premises to pay for.
Look at the poor old motor mechanic, thousands and thousands of pounds worth of kit for proper poop wages.

I have no issues with anyone getting paid loads of money but the point of the original post is what people thought of the quote the OP received and even with all things considered like tools,certifications,knowledge experience etc replacing a boiler is not a £1100 a day job.

With regard to whole profit debate it is slightly different when you are a one man band, I had a discussion with a friend once. He had bought a item for £X spent 2 days working on it and paid himself £150 a day and then sold the item for £X + £300 and then tried to explain how it wasn't worth doing because there was no profit in it. I understand the logic but he wouldn't have earnt anything for those two days if he hadn't done it. If he was paying someone else £150 to do the work then the argument stacks up.

Ok, I realise I said £650/day wage, when what I meant to imply was even includinging costs £650/day seems a lot. I realise this all depends on what the costs are and no info is given about the company/plumber fitting the boiler but I employ people in the building trade and my costs per employee per day are probably no more than 20% of the day rate I charge them out at. This would be considerably less if I was a sole trader.
I'm not picking an argument I promise, and I appreciate there are more gas regulations that bump up costs versus a builder but would be interested to know what costs are likely for a plumber?

One other thing to point out also is if it's the going rate then why should/would anyone charge less? I charge more than my day rate to fit a velux window that actually takes less than a day to fit for example!

Van, insurance, (van, liability and tool) tools, calibration of tools, training, ongoing registration costs, fuel, advertising, etc etc etc I could go on and on and on

On a normal day I’ve got £10k in the back of my van plus stock

Then once all the costs are taken off the tax man wants his bit.

Oh and if you do make a mistake then gas safe and the hse jump on you

Garages are charging about £80 an hour rates these days. Even at 50 per hour for a small business that's still 350 for a 7 hour day, not to be sniffed at!
