Cold cut saw

I'm looking at buying this saw however the bloke has tried to run it of some converter before and he said his converter wouldn't work it but he's had it running off a 3 phase power supply before.
I am wondering peoples opinions on weither my transwave static phase converter would run it ( I think its upto 3hp ) the motor on the saw is 1.5 hp maybe 2

He said something about it's the two speeds that the saw can go at are what messes the converter up

So you think it should work ok with both speeds using a static phase converter

Motor looks modern so there’s a chance it may be able to be wired for 230v but a pic of the data plate would help- if it’s dual speed you could just wire it up from inverter on one speed setting, and discard the other switching contactors etc, then use the inverter to control speed. Or wire it directly from a rotary converter and use the existing switchgear.

You could use a vfd for both speeds, but you’d need to do some parameter switching when you change the speeds via the motor - you are effectively changing it to a different pole configuration motor by switching contactors. There’s not much point if you have a vfd as you can control the speeds anyway.

I've just looked at the motor spec and it can only be used on 3 phase, however I showed him a picture of a vfd and he said that's what he was running it on and I think that's why its not been working correctly

3 phase is not the issue - a vfd will give you 3 phase, but in general a single phase powered vfd will give you 230v 3 phase out )there are exceptions...), so it’s the voltage rating you are interested in rather than the number of phases.

In that case it’s not going to be easy to use a vfd, though it can be done. Should run fine from your rotary converter, I think you just need to be aware of the control voltage for things like contactors - I think they can be a bit picky which phases you use, but I‘ve not had any dealings with them so I’m really only regurgitating what I’ve heard.

Sorry I thought you said rotary converter - though same applies I think.

It will work fine with a static. You may need to swap the phases around in the plug so the DOL contactor (if the saw has one) is switching one of the live phases not the "ghost " phase.
I run my 2 speed 415v colchester off a transwave static no issues.
