die holder

so i bought a 3/8bsp tap and die and a 1/2 bsp tap and die..

both taps are too big for my current holder (m4 - m12) so i found a larger one (m4 - m20) and got that.
only to find it opens out to 14mm
and the 3/8 bsp is 14mm across the corners but the 1/2bsp is 18mm...
but i can mod that by taking the blocks out and machining them..

the 3/8 bsp die is 1 1/2 inch diameter and i have a holder for that.

but the 1/2bsp die is 1 3/4 inch diameter and im struggling to find one....

only see 1 1/2 and 2 inch on ebay.

anyone know anywhere that sells these size of holders...

I have one here that may do, it's got a scrolling steady on the back of it and two pins that stop the die rotating, wouldn't take much to knock out the pins and drill/tap the case for conventional dies. It's probably an old conduit die holder.

If you have a look at lathe tailstock die holders, they come with adaptors to fit various size dies in the same body. Copying the idea so the die fits the existing holder might be an option.

i bought a set and 2 of them i had to slightly bore out . they didnt fit dunno who measured them when they were made

When I found the ones above this morning, it shows them available as a metric set and an imperial set. Some dies have a metric OD and some have an imperial OD (and not necessarily in an intuitive way). Some dies sold by international sellers have a metric or imperial OD for the exact same item depending on the target market (compare with pin punches - 1/4" ones are sold as 6mm). It is a bit of a lottery and you have to measure the actual OD of the die. It is just as bad putting an undersized die in an oversize holder, as then it is not centred.

I am motor mechanic - as "die holders" for awkward access - I tend to have to Tig braze dies into pipe and weld an old 3/8" socket to the pipe so I can use a socket set and extensions on the thing I have made.

If this is of any use to you , just pay the postage , I was given it but have no use . It currently has a 25mm die in it as it was used for electrical conduit .
I’d say the die is about 42mm diameter , ignore the pic

i do have a tailstock die holder. il dig that out tomorrow and see what sizes the holders are. might be lucky there.
and sam's photo's above has reminded me of a large die holder and die that i have of my old neighbours.
he was an electrician and it was used for doing 20mm and 25mm conduit, think its in the rollacab..

No problem , to be fair after being sat on it for about 5 years , I chucked it in the scrap bucket last week , now just dig it out . Let me me know either way

I think on the one immediately above and possibly on 8ob's one, the handles are removable, so if it is not quite the correct size, you could bore it out in the lathe. On the conduit-type holder, you would need to add a couple of retaining grubscrews to stop a standard die rotating.

Next post: "I need to tap a hole for a grubscrew in a die holder but my tap holder is too big 'cause I machined some off the jaws..."

well the conduit die holder is like above, about 40 to 42mm diameter.
(forgot to take glasses with me )

and the die holder for the tail stock is about 40mm.

dont want to mess with the conduit die holder i have, as it has the 20mm die in it.

though if someone has one going spare they not wanting. it wouldn't take much to open it up on the lathe and drill holes in the side for thumb screws
as long as the centre part isn't too long and i can fit it in a 4 jaw chuck, il be able to open it up to 45mm.

dont really have the time to be making a die holder for the tailstock holder currently.
trying to get the 3/8 to 1/2 adaptor made i need for the comp and auto drain.
as i need the comp sorted ASAP, got a hypertherm waiting to cut metal LOL..

however the link above OJCar has posted if its the right size will work.
il check it tomorrow with digital Vernier. and remember to take glasses with me this time.
though reading some of the reviews doesn't look very promising..

Your welcome to mine for the cost of postage , and as an added bonus , you could use the 25mm due in your other die holder . It’s only going to sit around again or get scrapped as I have no purpose for a 25mm die or holder

i measured the 1/2bsp die and it is 45mm...

getting the die holder centred in a 4jaw chuck is going to be a challenge, but once its there, opening it out to 45mm shouldn't take long.

Take a piece of wood, turn it to the existing dia. of the die holder and then turn the end down to 13mm. Saw off. Hold in tailstock chuck. Put diestock onto it and snug up jaws of four jaw onto die holder. Close enough.

It does have a cage / guide frame on the rear that is removable , which I guess you could tack / temp weld onto it so you could grab it I the chuck and then remove it after

little update.
decided to keep the one i got from sam as a conduit die holder as its in cleaner condition
handles and thumbscrews will go in bucket for rust removal.


found a bit of 2x2 to make the adaptor.





just need to clamp the holder in the 4jaw and take it out to 45mm.
been busy helping someone out with there van, so not had much free time.
