- If there is anyone available to take orders tomorrow....The only slight problem I can see - is I think they may be likely to want to ship to only one address - so as long as we are aware of that - not sure what it might cost to re-ship to other folks ? - just checked the Royal Mail shipping rate for Special delivery (Next day)
The problem with that is that the cost is listed at £7.75 for up to 2Kg - it then jumps to £19.45 for 10Kg - nothing in between...
Maybe someone knows of a cheaper way to move stuff ?

Sir, I shall never give up my battle for a decent Portamig 'Technical Brochure' and Powerpoint presentation on DVD. Oh, and a re programming kit where moaners like me can reprogramme the machine to our hearts content, then if we dont like it press a re-set button to default the settings. Also a Portamig dedicated TV channel.
And a Time Tunnel. would be nice, to do over bad welds

Ah well - just have to hope they are back before new year - and end of offer...

I should think the UPS is on a contract - I would doubt whether "Joe Bloggs" would get that rate for a few parcels

From what I can tell though (and I know very little about this subject) - this unit is a bit more expensive than the cheaper stuff on ebay - but it appears to be a much better piece of equipment - I am particularly looking at the "pulse thingy" - and the low starting amperage...so even at the non 5 for 4 rate - I will still get one if I can...
I am hoping this unit will be reasonably suitable for "thin stuff" ? (tig) - maybe someone else can comment in that area ?
It also looks to be highly portable (apart from needing a bl**dy great bottle)

Some quick maths:
I paid £333.11, as £275 + £8.50 P&P + VAT.
At a rough guess the 5/4 offer would reduce the per-unit price by 4/5. Lets say you go with Royal Standard Parcels, then the total per-unit price should be around £275 all-in (I'm assuming the shipping for 5 boxes is £25+VAT).
A good deal if it can be arranged.
As for the stuff on eBay, given the price of this unit I do not understand choosing to buy a no-name model from an overseas supplier. Castolin Eutectic is a well-known and respected make, now owned by Messer.
It is most certainly portable! Its just over 4 sugar bags heavy, so you could easily have it slung over your shoulder while using it. If you want portability AND TIG then you could go with a smaller bottle, like a BOC 'E'.

Mishka i know what your saying about unbranded ebay stuff, and if my messer ewm 140 is anything to go by it should be a real nice unit and at a very sensible price

Yes - I use E / K for my Portapack kit - I think maybe disposables if it needs to be ultra portable - and not much weld time needed...
How many sugarbags does an E / K cylinder weigh though ?

I'm pushing to introduce two new units of volume - the 'gulp' and its subunit the 'sip'. And for time - the 'yawn' and its multiple 'nap'. Easy! According to the BOC website an 'E' is 7 sugarbags and a 'K' is 75 sugarbags. I think the contents of a disposable cylinder would be measured in sugarcubes
Good to see such educated, creative thinking going on - there should be much more of it.
I suppose living in such a world renowned seat of learning helps though.

Bringing this thread back on topic for a moment - I notice that the heatsinks in my little welder are plain aluminium, rather than black anodised. Considering that black anodised surface has better heat dissipation (aprrox. 30% better) I wonder why they chose to use the ones they did. For example, if I swapped in black anodised heatsinks then I might get 100% use at the full 140A rather than at 100A.

roflmao miska, what is its duty cycle at full power, anything over 40% and you will be very hard pushed to over heat it MMA mode. time you have changed rods, removed the slag and got comfortable again, you will eat that non duty time quite easily. in TIG mode the duty cycle is normally higher and of course the duty cycle will be at 40 degrees, so unless you are working in the middle east, the duty cycle at 20 degrees will be a fair bit higher. Ill be very impressed if you do over heat it.
This 40 degree and 20 degree duty cycle was something i believed Matt was talking about a while ago, the current accepted standard is now at 40 degrees C, some quote only the 40 degree figure (lorch for one), some quote both figures and you can almost guarentee nearly all the chinese made ones will quote the 20 degree C figure, i would be almost certain the figure you have are for 40 degree air temperature bu i might be wrong

One point, is that if the machine is 100% rated at full output you don't need a thermal cutout, which (a) reduces the complexity and thus increases reliability (how many welders have thermal sensor problems?) and (b) you reduce the cost - no thermal sensor, no circuitry to read the sensor and put the system into a safe state if some threshold is reached, no little lamp telling you the machine got a little too hot and is now resting. A paranoid designer might put in a thermal fuse just to protect it in case of component failure.
(Christmas dinner now out of the way, letting the food slowly soak its way through my digestive tract!)

Our European viewers may like to follow up Castolin GmBH's "Aktionspaket UltraMax2" package (homepage, direct link to PDF). Basically, the same UltraMax2 as Castolin UK are selling, with arc cables, TIG-grade gloves, auto-helmet, chipping hammer, wirebrush, and handy case. All for 370 Euros + taxes and postage (I think - my German is a little rusty these days).

That's a cracking deal.
I got my Ultamax today. Very nice machine. The first surprise was its size - no bigger than a toaster. Weighs about the same too. Comfortable carry strap and lightweight leads, which are fine.
Starting it up, the fan runs from start, but very quiet.
I ran a few rods on it - 1.6mm to 4mm. The 1.6 I used on electrode neg, and ran very smoothly. Likewise the 4mm rods, no problem at all on 130-140 amps. Very smooth, very quiet, low spatter.
The arc starting was very easy, and the anti stick certainly seems to work fine.
The machine also ran stick when switched to tig, but made a lovely singing sound and failed to keep the arc on pulse... I only did that cos I wanted to see what happened if you knocked/set the switch accidently.
Tomorrow, if I get a chance, i'll run a side-by side comparison with my Lincoln V200 inverter, to see if there is any difference (other than the extra 12 Kilos!)
If you want a small, lightweight, quality German made lift tig inverter at a comparable price to the 140A thing Machine mart sell, get this one.
