Roofing question

The pointing is falling out of this edge. I've been up on the ladder and the whole lot of mortar is loose and ready to drop.

I could repoint it but would something like this dry verge fit the edge or are they for a different type of edge that has the barge boards? Roof is ten years old.

the dry edge would be good but u still need to fill up the holes where the morter dropped out because it be a great starter home for wasps and other insects...

do it properly and traditional . rake it out and repoint it instead of bodging plastic crap over it

dry edge will work but as its been cemented they cut the batons shorter to take the cement you could use a longer screw to get to the batton to fix the sides but with all that mucking around id rake it out and a good cement mix in there if you got a plaster mixer use that to mix the cement rathger than a cement mixer

If you repoint, avoid using bricklaying mortar mix as it always fails. Use a more gritty mix (sharp sand mixed with building/soft sand) and you'll find it lasts much longer. If you go the dry verge route you'll need to find ones compatible with the existing tile profile. Would the verge unit width be a problem?

A mortar verge is carried out by taking the verge tiles off and putting them back onto a bed of mix like laying a course of brick. The tiles can not be secured correctly by just pointing underneath. If you go for dry verge then the battons will need cutting off to the 2nd spar and new pieces fixing so they extend out to the edge of the tiles, this then becomes your fixing point for the verge pieces. If your careful removing the existing verge you can keep the undercloak thats on atm, if that falls apart then the tiles will need trimming back to the wall so the bottom edge of the verge pieces weatherproof the gap that's left. My advice is call in a roofer as its not as easy as it looks if you want a decent job, and sorry i can't help you as i am rammed with work atm.

Thanks to everyone for the input, been a busy few days so this has been on the back burner but I'm keen to get it done before the winter months as it has been on the to do list for a while having spotted the hole from the ground some time ago.

I think I'll take the advice given and steer clear of the plastic edging and get a roofer to lift and re-lay with fresh mortar, and in all honesty I wasn't keen on working at the top of the ladder anyway

@roofman what ball park figure should quotes for this be, just to give me an idea? I'm in Lancashire, not far from Preston, if area makes much difference.
