Nice idea and a good job done, I think it would look more pleasing to the eye with not quite so many turns in the scroll, look at the good quality commercial ones and decide on the best looking ones as a guide, Just my first thoughts.

Looks good and always nice to use home made jigs.
I tend to agree about the scroll, half a turn less would be my choice... but we all differ so it's no big deal.
Perhaps make another one now for larger diameter scrolls then you have an option on design.

Not bad. Scrolls with that many turns are hard to get right. There's a slight flat spot on the outermost turn, which is why people are mentioning swiss rolls. Sort that out and it will be perfect. Incidentally, if you have the means to do so, heat it up, the result will ALWAYS be better.

My pet gripe is the flat bit at the centre. If you can get that to a nice tail, then much better. IMHO of course.

I know exactly what you meant, I just like to push things when I can!
Heres one I did yesterday over the anvil, made from onevpiece of 10mm square. ..
That's the way to do it
I have made a little pot forge just waiting for my boot sale Fairy to find me an anvil or aso? a steel one Farrier size for a fiver would be nice
Made a knife out of a file etc. but loose the blow without a solid mass
Just tatting about really as I am at the NLR age.

Hi KF,
I don't, but I'd be happy to make one. If you want a rough guide to how I did it, like this:
Start with your length of bar and forge a point on it. Come back half an inch, turn the hammer over and make a neck over the edge of the anvil with the cross pein end. Then use the flat face of the hammer to draw down behind the neck so you have a tapered end with a knob on it. Heat the knob then bash the hell out of it. As it flattens it will miraculously turn into a leaf. Knock it over the edge of the anvil so it's bent at more or less 90 degrees.
Now heat the tapered part and with the leaf stuck out sideways, put it over the edge of the anvil and start tapping just over the anvil edge, slowly feeding the bar forwards. Keep reheating along the length. You can correct by holding it vertically hot bit down and tapping the top as well as tapping on the open side of the scroll. It takes a bit of practice to figure out what it will do when you hit it where, but it isn't magic!
