well I overcame my impatience and just waited for my maplins transformer to come in the post.
An excellent mod.Thanks to all on this and other threads that have devoted their time and efforts to share this mod.
Now I at least have a shot at learning to weld.My weld beads look alot better already.
Maybe there is hope for my Sip yet?!?

Well I have finally gotten around to doing the transformer mod on my sip. got all the parts and connected them as shown, i got the transformer from RS components and the rest from maplin, anyway switched it on and when i hit the torch trigger the wire feed motor doesn't run at all just a short thud/click which i guess is the main transformer kicking in, thought i had blown something so reverted back to orignal and everything is working, does anybody know what might be going on? i have checked the connections over and over again but nothing, my transformer is arranged 0 12 0 12 i have connected the middle 2 ports together and have the live comming from the 12 and neg coming from 0.

Any help would be appreciated,

The first thing I would do is check that you're getting 24v AC from the transformer, and then 24v DC from the rectifier.

Checked it this evening and i am not getting 24v off the Transformer, what you think? dud transformer?

could be take it out of circuit and measure resistance end to end of primary and secondary windings

Have you 12v accross each of the secondary windings, you may have them out of phase.

OK from the top of this thread my mains connections are opposite, ie. the blue wire shown at the top is my neutral and the black my positive so swapped them around on the transformer and now have 24v out of the rectifier The motor is still not running though, does run if revered back to he original, going to compare my welders wiring diagram and see if there are any more differences.

edit:Got it working, had to change a couple of connections, hopefully will enjoy a much smoother feed now!!

Hi i have a few questions about this mod i hope someone here can help am not much of a sparky

I have found a frame mont transformer from RS stock no 504-038 sorry i do not know how to post a short cut to there site .

some of the spec is 100va and 230v 2x20v . does thie mean that i could just use one of the 2x20v conections or does it not work like this ? And also can i use the bridge AR84F as in the first post am not sure what they do

I ordered the 504-016 from RS same as previously mentioned in the this post just different order number it has 2x12v outputs easy enough to get 24v, just connect the middle 2 connections together and connect to the other 2 for 24v.

I think you should be able to connect to one of the 20v outlets, though someone else might know for sure.

The AR84F is the one i used and works great, this converts AC to DC (AC from the transformer to DC needed for the Motor).

I would say after just doing the mod to make sure you get all your connections correct and follow the guide at the top of the post carefully, it is good!!

Heres a couple of pictures showing my mod, decided to mount the transformer in the "live" side, last pic shows the welds i am getting after the improvements, also a couple of pictures showing connection to convert to big bottles of gas (which i hope to get this week).

got my bridge from maplin this morning but i was having problems getting the transformer from RS so i got one from JMS online £20 to my door . it only has four screw terminal two for 240v and two for 24v can not wait to try this .

so got all my parts yesterday and today i fitted all the components and what a diffrence it makes . the welder should be like this from new why sip dont do it like this i dont know .

the cables running through the panel need gr omits and the 230V cables need to go through the same hole or the eddy currents might melt the panel!

Turbo 150

I have turbo 150 thing. Came to use it today and not wire feed. Press the trigger and there is no movement on the relay or motor drive.

Took the top off the relay and if you press the top the wire drive runs and the welder welds.

I have checked the switch on the torch and this is working fine so there is something amiss on the PCB.

If i do this transformer mod will this sort the problem out as there appears to be no voltage going to the coil of the relay ??

The relay might be gone, it happened mine!! is there a blackening above the contacts on the relay as i have shown in the picture? If it is a circuit board problem then the transformer mod wont fix it as this only changes the power supply that goes to the board.

no the relay looks fine just lack of power going to it.Pursume that square black thing on the board is the power supply for the relay ?

Equivalents for 110 volt welder

Just wondering what transformer would be a 220v equivalent to use in a 110v welder.
