Just wonder if any one else has used this method I have used parallels before but this was dead easy took less than five minutes to get less than 0.01mm movement in x and Y



just in case after i checked with disc at 90 degress and 180 degress in case of error and in another area of table , Not bad for a £25 disc !

how do you know the disc is made to those tolerances?

surely if you rotate the disc test at 90 and 180 degrees once set up you would then get an error if its hub to inner disc face is not parallel. im not looking for microns no movement on a 0.01mm dial gauge should be good enough

Thats how I do mine. Disc the other way up for me.

The disk helps from a practical perspective; if you sweep the indicator over a bare table, the plunger wil fall into the tee slots.

As long as the face that is bolted to the table is parallel to the surface on which the indicator tip rests, it makes the job fast, especially because tramming is an iterative process.

A disk will allow you to check the nod at the same time as the tram, and might be larger diameter than the table is wide.

The OP says he has checked the disk by rotating it 180 degrees. Any change in the difference between indicator readings (even if the head is not in tram) would be double the error in the disk.

Surely you check the table not a item bolted to it

Surely if you check a parallel item botted to the table then you are checking the table? im not talking about toolroom standards here just tramming the head in both planes that was easy to set up to get it very close. if i was machining something on the bed or in a vice i would always use a dial indicator first.

Im not the first to try this method obviously just had a new disc i never used and thought i would give it a go

that make more sense now i think of it ! just need to find a L shaped holder for the dial indicator i have put somewhere
