Welding K1100 Cylinder Head

Always arguments who was first with anything, I remember seeing it first in "fast car" or "ccc". Some french I think student did it, no idea when, but I think pre '89. I probably still have the mag in the loft, please excuse me if I don't go looking for it....

You weld a pipe onto the side of the head and bolt another onto the block using one of the core plugs. The oil feed is taken from the oil pressure pipe feed on the front of the block, you need to remove a Allen screw from the head and drill and tap it for the 1/8 NPT fitting.

I did the corrosion repairs on my Standard 12 head with a Stealth 200A digitig, no pre heat, just got stuck in. Areas that were difficult/impossible to clean took a bit more time but it all went swimmingly. I had to repair chambers, water ways and the distributer location.

I've welded a k series head to repair softened face damage - just for kicks- with my 200A Selco. It worked fine but the torch got real hot, hence my recommendation for a water cooled torch.

Here's an 8v version. Actually, I've been walking around this for a couple of years, sat on top of an automatic block, like new, but it's an auto and making the oil pimp work has been the issue. However, Inhad a thought just now - could I use a Ford pump, driven from the distributor gear? I guess it depends on getting the right gear and it turning the right way.

I also have a k100rs sat on the shelf ready for this conversion for an equinox i have in storage but need to finish my 7 port turbo first and then restore my mk1 elf.

As for no pre heat, actually heard of a couple of people trying this and had problems with the head cracking afterwards. As for the 201 not been unto the job, can't see that been the case.
Been drilling holes in and re welding some cast alloy metro engine mounts today. There about twice as thick as the deck of the cylinder head.

Popcorn might well be correct about the 201, Im basing my experience on the use of a single phase Cebora set. I always compare it to other simlar size machines but its only 160Amp not 200. That 40A extra gotta be worth having.

Welded in the end plate on mine tonight, the pedal was to the floor for a bit of time, but I think it's set to 189 max for some reason. I had preheated the head on my ceramic hob first. Need to make some plugs and get on with it.

Have you been watching Allen Millyards videos he did for the lockdown ? He was welding together a Kawasaki cylinder head, and uses a gas barbeque to preheat his work. It doesn't seem very scientific, but it works.

Thanks for that Ronan, I hadn't seen that one before. I'm starting to get the impression that the temperature isn't that important just the fact it's pre-heated.
Maybe I'm overthinking the process.

What intrigues me about these things is that someone knew both engines well enough think the two halves could be mated.

I wonder if anyone out there is making dog slow K1100 engines with Austin cylinder heads?

Ha, you never know, but you'd have to sort the oil drain issue out first.

Re the question on preheat, 100deg (spit on it) would seem to be high enough?

Maybe someone at BMW's development department thought "right, everyone else is doing this wrong", "what we need to do is put a car engine in a bike....and turn it on it's side".

Didn’t someone do a Hillman Imp head conversion on an A series? It was a long time ago & I can’t remember the details.
