So I have been welding for years mainly stick and I have a basic qualification on mug. Anyhow I work on listed buildings ( mainly timber frame ) often brackets and straps need making up to support Timbers which have rotten etc. After my welder kept me waiting far too long i decided to book in to get a coding on a basic T fillet weld. I spent an hour or two at home running some heads and they all came out looking spot on.
Day of the test my welds came out looking great plenty of slag peel on every run. ( three pass fillet ) 7018
Then upon inspection my root failed big time , barely any penetration. Note that I was using a cheap £200 welder.
The guys told me to use their miller rig and have another go , good lord that was like taking a driving test in somebody else’s car with the steering wheel on the other side.
Couldn’t get comfy, was tensed and stressed and my welds were coming out like ****. Machine was running on 70amps, 20 Volts and welding 12mm plate.
So guys what advice can I get from here onwards , I’ve always prided myself on being able to lay good solid beads ( no I’m not a professional and don’t claim to be in that world ) feels like it’s knocked my confidence and I need those code as another part of my toolbox for my work.
