my sets....

hey up all

my garage has been broken into on two occasions and loads of power tools stolen (mostly they were broken/burned out, bought for peanuts (spares) at the bootsales) my welding sets don't live in the garage for the fear of being stolen so they live in the cupboard at the top of our stairs (together with many of my other power tools)

here's my sets at rest....


i made a strong box into my dexion shelving in the garage by welding sides and a back on and then making two doors of 2mm steel, fabbing a locking system similar to the backdoors of juggernaut lorries, i welded the hinges on.

sure enough, some scrote got in again, they tried prying the r/h door open, this dented the door outwards and bent the top r/h hinge but the bleeders didn't get in and the door/ hinge just hammered back into place....
here's a pic (bloody garage is a right mess, there's a car in there that going soon, hopefully giving me loads of room)

EDIT, meant to ask, how's everyones security, are your tools safe?, i've since fixed some lugs through the garage, either side of the side door that anchors a large hefty chain and massive padlock, anyone trying to force entry will wake up the whole street (hopefully!)

Vans and garages/sheds get targeted a lot. Good quality stuff that costs a lot to buy gets sold on for only a few quid.

yup, there's a 1971 toyota crown custom estate behind the lathe, the garage is 25'x 9'6", it'll be great to have some room just in case i feel the urge to swing a cat

re the cupboard, it's the only place our lass'll let me stow my gear, i have drills, routers, trimmers in fact all sorts in the cupboard, in the strong box there are all my airtools, grinders, prssure washer, again, there's all sorts in there, i've got a couple of chop saws on the shelving that won't fit in the strongbox but even i can't get to them when i want to use them so thieves probably wouldn't find out that they're there

Garage doors are a bit of a weak point. These are pretty good, but do advertise that you may have something of value inside.

If you have a rear door to exit by, its easy to simply put two pieces of flat bar in the runners at the top, or spring bolts at the bottom.

Going to build a van vault type thing over christmas, to store tools in the van. Custom sized.

Could be something to use in garages aswell. Although the big ones get quite dear. But they do hold a lot,

I keep the cheap tools in the shed, and all the Hitachi gear inside

Hi,

it's a bit risky specifying security on a public forum...

but locked tool cabinet, multiple locks on the garage door, security light outside, alarm box on the house.

It's pretty quiet around here, not much by way of break-ins, but basically if they want to get in they will do.

I leave my car at the end of the drive and hope they have a go at that first :-)

I'm just trying to delay the time it takes for them to get into the garage, into the tool cabinet, and hope that the floodlights put them off.

for my shop i have this old garages with broken down doors with a brand new metal door and sliding locks(it behind my old doors). my prize crowbars (about 2 dozen )
also a few other things to keep people out.(you do not want to find out the hard way.)

'fraid not, i'm a burner in a heavy foundry at sheff forgemasters

here's what i do, though that's a very small job...



this is a bit bigger at around 580tonnes cast and roughly 330tonnes finished


there are three blokes arc-airing on the top of it,that's creating an arc using a torch that holds a copper coated carbon rod (about 20mm dia)and has a sream of air that surrounds the rod and blows the molten steel away.

hah- bleach, after i was 'done' the second time, i got my two ton trolley jack and hung it from the roofspars at head height and just inside the door so that when the perpetrators came back for another go, it gave them a headache, unfortunately, they never returned and i ended up with a very lumpy head- i guess the joke was on me

Break-in's

I had a garage broken into and from the remains of the padlock they had used bolt cutters to remove it, then had the cheek to pinch my bolt cutters amongst other things!.
Insurance company did not want to pay for my engine stand as it was "something normally kept in a car"!!
