Compressor Motor Conversion

Hi All i must this looks like a very nice forum

I need your information regarding a compressor that i have at work it is a HPC SH42A 3 piston pump and the tanks is huge it has not been used for about 18 Years and i may have the chance to buy it all looks in working order but the motor is 3phase would i be able to put a single phase motor on it and would it be worth doing

depends on the size of motor if its bigger than 5hp your stuffed on a domestic 240v supply . . is it belt driven or direct drive flange mounted

depends on what size HP motor is needed and do you intend to run it from a domestic supply

3 hp max from a 13 amp supply

10 hp is 7.5KW, although it is possible to get a 240 Volt single phase motor that size, it would be difficult to obtain apart from new, which is very expensive ! Also, you would need a supply larger than 32 amp to power it. Also think about the running cost !

stick an engine on it single cyllinder diesel such as petter ac 1 or similar

What power is that ? Would need to be at least 15 hp.

the ac1 may be a little low but there are similar engines some 2 cylinders should be around there

the yanmar L100 is 10HP

is just a case of buying a 3Hp Motor i am ok buying new as i will get the compressor next to nothing what size pulley

been looking at honda Gx petrol engines on Ebay i think may be better regarding runing cost not sure how to fit it

just use a pully, but you would also have to fit a valve that blew off once the pressure had been reached as the engine would keep on running

In my opinion it will be more trouble than its worth for you, to make it run off a engine you would need to have a genie or a suction valve unloader system on it.

what would that do though, if you dropped the revs it would just stall the engine as it would still try to compress air

depending if you could find one big enough and strong enough a clutch from and air conditioning unit may work but you would have some electrical work to do as you would have to drop the revs as soon as the clutch disengaged or the engine revs would go through the roof

i have seen a valve the when it reaches set presure it blows in to the atmosphere not sure where

Yes, thats a pneumatic unloader valve, it would vent the compressor output when a preset pressure was reached then, allowing the engine to continue running with the compressor blowing to atmosphere. Then when the receiver pressure dropped to another preset pressure it would close for pressure to build again.

i think this is more of a waste of your time and money
compressor that's not been used in 18 years pump might be seized may not even work for starters then there is what state is the pressure vessel in rust wise if it's been stood that long if you are going to all the trouble of fitting a engine and unloader valves etc etc might just be cheaper to buy one that works

heres one looks like it needs a cap for the motor maybe £20 to sort it not too far away from london now at £10.50 on fleybay
