cutting angles on pipe/tube

Has anyone come up with a jig to cut angles on pipe/tube,i dont have a chop saw as of yet,i've been asked by a friend to do him a wood burner,thing is i cant run the chimney threw the roof and have to go out the wall and i'd like to make a neat job of it,i'm ok cutting by hand/grinder on box section its pipe/tube and getting the angles flush that buggers my brain up.

The dia of pipe is 50mm,
ideas anyone?

Yoo know those hand operated mitre saws you see?

Where the saw frame is on an adjustable pivot?

See them for around £10 in pound shops and on sale?

Put a hacksaw blade in one and be patient.

Not actually done that mind, it's just a thought...

Also, you might want to make a "T" shaped piece of steel you can jubilee clip to the end of the pipe. Then you can measure the rotation of the material if you have an angle finder.

90 degree bends can be done by cutting one piece of tube at 45 degrees and rotating one picec throught 180 degrees. But "lobster backs" look better. This means cuutning the tube at 22.5 degrees, rotating it by 180 degrees and making another 22.5 degree cut so that the shortest side of the offcut is say 1/2" or so.

Now you have two 45 mitres that will make a smoother looking 90.

Or you could use a 15 degree cut to make three 30 degree mitres.

The amount you allow btween mitres is altering the radius of the bend as it were.

The "T" clipped to the end and a ordinary spirit level will do that.

It's also useful where you have two chages af direction that aren't in the same plane...

It might take some searching but some one posted a link to a program that will produce a template from your printer, you just wrap it round the pipe.

The program you mean is probably Tubemiter, here trouble is despite its name it doesn't do mitres, only branches, tees etc, If I've got something to cut thats too big for the saw I just develop a pattern on a piece of sheet and wrap it round, then cut it with a grinder.

For certain tube sizes, i use a piece of a close fitting but larger size slipped over, (cut on a bandsaw to the required angle), slide it over, hold and mark round.

A bit of 60mm 5mm wall tube is what i use for 48mm tube.

Ideal for mitering handrails etc in place.

Anything thats too big or not worth doing it for, a paper/card/tin template is made.

Its pretty easy to produce pipe wraps without the aid of a computer. A flexible ruler and a third hand is about the only things you need

I use the tube mitre programme that Tig Paul refers to. I have the popular angles printed on laminated card and they are suprisingly quick to use. Some stainy handrails we did recently - used it on there - very accurate joints which i fused with Tig giving very easy to clean up welds. You just need someone good on the grinder with you to cut them as you mark them for him, and weld them in once cut.
With the aid of a plotter - we even used it for some 12" saddles for a gas main tee-off.

50mm for a wood burner flue? Or do you mean 150mm? W/A

i know its been awhile since this was active but has anyone tried these
coping calculating tools? have'nt myself but it would be helpfull.
okay just realised the photo that shows how it works is too small, so, all the pins slide individually. You press it against your pipe at whatever angle you want and the pins slide back giving you the required shape to then mark on your work piece. you just have to get one for each size pipe you use.

Simple way to mark, if you can hold the tube at the angle required and dip the end in water then pencil or chalk the watermark.

Sorry to resurrect this but it might just be me I cant seem to get this to work. I need to cut a 45 degree angle in 110 diameter pipe. I tried using an abrasive chop saw but its just too small. SO I need to cut it with a grinder but marking the line is proving awkward. It does not even look right when a blade has cut it half way through already.

I have printed out some templates using miter as above and that seems to be ok for 45 degree angles to the side.

Mine is just one chop through and turned round to make up 90 degrees when welded.

Any help appreciated...
