Flanging/Flaring tooling

Had a half day to myself so started making flanging tooling for a light weight seat I will be making for my buggie projects.
First attempt did not go too well the sheet had a tendancy to buckle when the dimple was formed. To overcome this I made another set with a flange on the outside of the dimple which worked a treat when pressed the flange clamped the sheet and helped keeping the sheet from buckling.

Nice Job.

Im going to have a go at a new seat soon for my lad.
He's got a 14" Kirkey Intermediate in there at the moment and its getting a bit tight but its a good pattern to work off.

Those Kirkey Lightweight seats with the flanged holes are so damn expensive..

Now that's pretty close to what I need to flange the holes in the replica Soviet aircraft seats I have sitting on my living room floor! Better than the billiard ball and big hammer we used on the other ones we made!

Nice furniture! Is that a folded safe edge or have you found someone to supply edging I need some for my seats like this.

It's just folded aluminium strip that we shrunk/stretched as necessary and solid rivetted (trad aircraft style) onto the panel edges. I looked at pre-formed edge profiles but they'd still need shrinking/stretching so went the DIY route.

FH Brundle do edge profiles and I think they can do a split tube/fat U edges in aluminium (which is what the Kirkey seat looks like from the pic) - worth checking with them?

Nice looking tooling.

I made a couple to flare holes in an MX bike stand, but they only had bolts threaded into the top so i could beat them with a hammer.

btw... I'm guessing from the 9lb figure and the look of the kirky welds that this is in ally? What alloy/temper/thickness sheet are you using?

Yep - bought a bead roller on eBay. It's pretty basic and I'll get round to adding some bracing to it at some point but for 1.2mm steel and 1.6mm aluminium it seems to work fine as it is.

I'm working on making a new set of rollers for it so that I can do old-school wired edges on panels.

checked it out, looks good, i wonder can you get a heavyer version! those seats i have to say look the businesss, if proof be needed that manufacturing engineering is art it is those seats.

It's the same as the Harbor Freight version the US guys buy and then strengthen with various extra plates and braces. They're running 14 gauge steel through them with no problems.

Why not go the full hog and get an all in one got this cheeper than the jenny on fleabay in the right place at the right time.

It is capable of false wired edge, swaging, joogle, louvre cutting, doming,circle cutting and cutting slots thats what I can remember.

hi, will want to rib 3mm alu and either 1.5mm or 2 mm stainless 304, so i suppose i would go for plant. thought i would have to go to the expence of getting tools made up and presses but if i could just set up a machine to do a few simple ribs, it would make all the difference.

Now THAT is a machine I could put to good use but I can honestly say that I never, ever seem to find myself in the right place at the right time! :vsad:

I have been looking for a long time now and hold off untill bargains come along still kick myself for selling my jenny was handy for swaging tube where the Pullmax has limitations to the dia that can be swaged, will have to get another jenny at some point but only when one comes up at a reasonable price would also like a wheeling machine.
