Tungsten carbide tip scriber

I must have made about a dozen of these over the years. Very simple, this one was a bit of shopping trolley, but any 5-6mm round bar (welding rod) will do. Warm one end and flatten then smooth the shape with a grinder, heat again and bend the end over, next braze a bit of tungsten on the other end (a local engineering shop will probably have plenty of broken tungsten tool tips) grind to a point, and that is it, should last for years. I usually lose them (or give them away) long before they wear out.

Thats a good sized one. I need at least half a dozen kicking about so i can always find one. Tend to make them from old round files, old punches etc. A sheet metal worker gave me one once, which was a piece of flat plate cut into a shape that fitted into your hand nicely - a very good tool to use. Lost it tho.

I use blue-point ones, quite handy, the tip can be inverted so it doesnt stab you when its in your pocket

I Use old taps,M4,M5 welded on to a length of 6mm bar,and for a centre punch i use an old M16 tap!

Be careful using taps as punches, they are liable to shatter, a bloke who used to work for me lost an eye, (not whilst in my employ) using a centre punch made from a section of round file.

ill not be doing that with an old 5/16 tap i found anymore then :whistle:

what sort of heat/equipment is required to braze tungsten?

I use oxy-acetylene,I'm not sure if map gas would do. I think it probably would.

MAPP gas will barely do brazing. I have a MAPP torch and brazing was near impossible except on very small stuff. Something thin like the scribe might work though.

Yeah i agree..I bought one a couple of years ago online from micromark.com. It is diamond tipped and it's been used to scribe anything from rusted steel, to hardened surfaces and SS.
The best thing about it is that it's cheap.
The worst thing is that is looks like a black ballpen, cap and all, and I have to keep reminding friends that IT IS NOT A PEN, lest someone should try to use on paper, find out that it isn't working and bin it. It's my biggest fear!
