Carbon Arc Heating/Brazing

Hi Guys,
I have a very old oil cooled oxford 110 amp arc welder it has an 80v tap a 50v tap and a 3rd unlabelled tap I was told by C. G. & W Young Ltd was for carbon arc brazing, purely by coincidence my girlfriends dad was clearing out today and came across a load of 8mm carbon rods I now need a holder and advice how to use them and what a brazing tap is

heres the torch if u can get one second hand . the carbon rods fit in the holders at an angle .then are slid closer to each other till they touch using the black knob on handle then an arc will form producing a high temperature flame enabling u to braze :laughing:

Ah this is where people have misunderstood me, my welder has a special brazing tap it's a Oxford model 110B and that tap is for single carbons according to the manufacturers its 230 amp at 6v and needs special brazing rods with a flux core

so what you are saying is you use the carbon rod as you would a welding rod and arc it against the piece you want to heat up.
sounds alot less control to me as you wouldnt be able to move the heat away from the work piece without losing the arc

I'm sure I recall adverts in Exchange & Mart etc, years and years ago mind, where someone used to sell a carbon holder (single carbon) that looked a bit like an old soldering iron. This was connected to car batteries or a welder and the workpiece connected to earth. I was probably over 40 years ago, so I don't remember any more. I imagine that the fluxed workpiece was heated by actual contact of the single carbon and then a filler rod fed in.
Anyone else see that?

I gave away my torch like the one pictured above but I seem to recall it had an option to run with one carbon only - just a separate carbon holder to fit onto the torch and use on it's own. ….sounds a bit like TIG but with carbon instead of Tungsten and no shielding gas doesn’t it??

Do your carbon rods have a thin copper sheath – I think they need that?

I still have one carbon arc torch (a different design to the one above) but I think that particular one is definitely geared only for double carbon operation. It's hung up in my dad's old workshop - I won't be using it as I gave all the carbons away with the other torch. It could be up for grabs for the cost of postage (wouldn’t be for a week or so because it’s 3 hours away in the car)?

Aye, many thanks again for the torch and rods

I've had a bit of a play with it when I've had the odd few minutes...

It does have the adaptor but I've not found using a single rod much use

On another note the flame from two is pretty fierce, plenty of thick clothing needed to prevent a sun tan, I had to turn the shade up on my mask too

Graham, if it's still available, I would love to have that other carbon torch to try it out with mu old oil filled Oxford arc welder. Please contact me on ray.s@dsl.pipex.com if poss.

The low voltage of this transformer tap (6V) would suggest that it might be for use with a resistance brazing and soldering tool which use carbon electrodes. Not to be confused with a carbon arc torch, which uses an arc between two carbons.

I have the same Oxford welder (RT110B?) and it's got the brazing tap for resistance brazing as suggested - the book also mentions carburising / case hardening by heating the work and rubbing the carbon into it, though I've never tried! If I can find the book I'll follow up with some more info...
