Steering Joint Puller

Built this to remove the drop arm from my landrover discovery as I needed to swap the PAS box over and the replacement came from a range rover.

Design was roughly stolen from a transit van forum with the measurements then made to fit the discovery.

It worked neatly, after a little bend when I first wound it right up, a tap with a hammer and the joint just fell apart. After that it didnt bend anymore on the second box and works nicely.

Plus I got to do some arc welding...welds ok?!

Saved me the £140 LR charge or paying a garage to do it for me, esp when I had two boxes...

I might make one myself, I currently use sykes-pickavant hydraulic puller. When it lets go it throws the arm and the puller at you!

Id love to have a go with one of those...I very nearly bought one to do this job, then looked at my bank balance then the pile of various bits of scrap...then the huge crank bolt id bought but never used...and decided a puller wouldnt take too long. Think that took about 4hours to fab up outside on a B&D Workmate in the sun! (with a little ESAB Stick)

Right some dimensions....I hope that people can get what they need from this?

Right....

The steel back plate is 5mm thick (and probably the thinnest id want to make it)

The two peices of angle weld to this are 6mm thick, dimensions of the angle is about 75mm (giving a "throat" of about 65mm with the angle welded on the front for support), and the jaw ive made 17mm (grinding off one side of the angle)

The gap between the jaws is 56mm although this fits the RR arm nicely its a little too big for a discovery box so I suggest you put a caliper around the arm on your box before making one, I suspect that for a disco about 50mm would be perfect. Having said that: it did work for both a disco and RR box, and if Id have made it fit the disco box tightly it wouldnt have fitted the RR box.

The bolt is 18mm in diameter (although any huge bolt/nut you have about does the job..)

With the bolt screwed right down the distance from the end to the level of the jaws is about 30mm, although it'll have pushed the arm off way before you actually get there..

To be honest I didnt really use any firm dimensions to make it and just worked with the box beside me and a vernier...getting the dimensions to make it fit, I hope that the above should be fine for everybody though.

Ive been wondering if I should make up a load more of these to sell on ebay...anybody think its worth it? The LR part is about £140...

I heard of someone selling plastic wrist bands on Ebay; bought for 20p, sold for 99p. How they made their most money was by charging £2.99p P&P. For a first class stamp and a Jiffy bag
So if you could make them cheap enough, and hope no one spots this thread.
