disassembling drillpress

Hi guys,

I have a very nice drill press I got from my work. Due to health and safety regulations, they had to replace the drill and I got it for free! The taper is a little squiffy, though. Does anybody any ideas how to remove this taper? Check the photos.

If any other photos are required, give a shout.

You need a morse taper drift, here's one clicky
Easy enough to make from a piece of 5mm plate.

A tapered wedge, starting from 0 to about 5cm and about 25cm long, as thick as will fit in the hole. Tap it in tap it out. Repeat for the other side. Should work.

I have a tapered drift which is sprung loaded in a brass handled hammer ! Beat that !

Okido, Thanks guys. I tried it with a screw driver that fitted in well, but did not tap it that hard. I'll make a taper to fit in there and redo the exercise. It was more that I just wanted to check whether I was on the right path and that there is not another method of fixation used.

Just so's you know, a Morse Taper is the standard fixing for most large drill bits (eg 12mm +), reamers and many chucks. Most lathe and large drill operators will spend plenty of time knocking drifts through their spindles (ooh er, missus).

It also looks like there's a Jacobs Taper at the other end of the fitting in your picture, which the chuck goes onto. They come in various sizes and numbers.
Here's some info

To replace the fitting/drill bit etc, you line up the lug at the top with the corresponding slot in the quill, and slap it in!

I recall that one of my first "benchwork" jobs as a young apprentice was to make myself a set of drifts, with hacksaw and file. Now it's your turn.

Morse Taper

Looking at the second pic, you may have a reducing sleeve in there, possibilities the drill quill maybe a 2 or 3 Mt and the twist drill you have in maybe a 1 morse taper, the sleeve makes up the difference and may eject with the drill when you get the drift tapped in or may have to come out on its own.

at work we put the taper drift in then let the chuck up and that normally does the trick

Its just the outer part (non-spinning) of the spindle which slides up and down with the hand feed (see gear teeth machined into side, then inside that you can see the inner (spinning) spindle, which has the morse taper internally machined, and the top end of the arbor.

That's it - no reducer?

That is the design, Astro. The geared sleeve is static. the spinning spindle can be seen through the notch and at the bottom. The taper is then in this. I suspected the taper all along, but doubted the amount of force I was using. As we say in ZA, with force you can only break off your finger in your a... oops bottom. It'll be popped out tomorrow morning.

All tapped apart. Saw on the web that new ones are not that expensive. My current chuck is a 3-16mm chuck. Past Saturday I found a Metabo 0-10mm chuck in the metal dumpster at the local town dump. Turns out it is also a B16 taper

. It is still in good condition!
