Air Cut off tool mod to use Ultra thin cut off discs

Been meaning to post this up for some time. The discs available for the Inline Air cut off tool are expensive and too thick, causing the tool to slow down.

Been the tight Yorkshire man I am I save the cut off discs used in my 4" grinder.

I machined up a collet set to use the remaining disc up. These were machined out of Brass, but that's only as I had a bit laying about.

The pictures speak for themselves. So I'll leave it at that

That's very handy, I bought the proper discs from Machine Mart and they didn't last any time at all. You might have a market for those.

That's ingenious!

Your mod will; reduce consumable cost, speed up cutting times, reduce waste metal, give tighter kerfs & reduce heat input. :cool:

Would might be a good idear as well is a short extention to move the wheel away from the thick end of the grinder,,,,,

It does have it's flaws, because it is so close to the body it's hard to use it as a cut off for mid cuts in tube etc. A full disc helps but you do lose torque, I have one of the finger power files that has the output at 90 to the body, same as a grinder, that Im going to make a fitting for, this will allow easy cutting of tubes etc

Great idea!
I've thought about doing this for a while so have kept all my part worn 4 1/2 inch discs, unfortunately I don't have access to a lathe.Any chance of making some more up for a small charge?
need to be for 22mm bore discs.

Not wanting to spoil the party, and I might be wrong but..

I thought the air cut-off tools ran a lot faster than electric grinders, and as the blades were matched so to speak, the angle grinder discs might not be safe to use?

if the disk is half worn down it will be running at half its full surface speed rating. therefore a speed increase on a part worn disk wont afect its safety

True but the Dia half the size so the speed is going to be much lower

Just how thin are the disks?

I used 1.6mm disks on mine. Once I got an angle grinder, I don't use them often though.

I use 1mm Slitting Discs. It doesn't get used much, more of a it's there when needed.

made one of these up my self today, brilliant idea, well would be bit i somehow managed to make it 2mm oversized! thats what you get from commiting measurements to memory, oh well, will turn it down to the right size 2morow and give it a test drive

It's funny I found this thread looking for something else and I've done exactly the same thing (well I cheated slightly as I don't have a lathe so I got the machinist at work to knock two stainless steel adaptors up to enable me to use slitting discs)
