my new project car -- 1991 mitsubishi colt gti

thought i would share my project page with everyone, i had another colt a while back but ended up getting rid of it and buying this when i moved to dundee

my old username was "mike" so you might find info and pics from the last project in the search option

but anyway its going through the same conversion as the last

2 litre turbo vr4 lancer evo engine conversion and awd swap, im just concentrating on the engine swap for now until i have more funds

here is the pics and info i have up to now





now the rocker cover is off you can see that something is missing from the top of the valves


after a look around inside the head i find these just sitting there


after seeing that i might have bent a couple of valves at least i then strip off the cylinder head to find the damage you see below

so after seeing what i would have to remove iv made the easy decision of just rebuilding the 4G63T vr4 engine and im just going to drop that in, for now i think il leave it as non turbo while i look around for a new turbo unit and intercooler.

another quick update on project VR4AWD, iv now finished removing the old blow up 1.8 gti lump

as you can see from the pics i had fun removing the engine

it didnt take me to long honest :P

the shell is now ready to drop in the new 4G63T engine but iv still got to get the cash to buy bearings, clutch, and also get the cash to get the crank reground from agra and also have the head skimmed while its there

i got bored and p***ed off with it just sitting there looking sorry for itself while im busy with all my new customers jobs in the garage

here you go anyway here is the pics and as you can see i had lots of fun and cant wait to get started on the other work

iv now got all the front end stripped down to fully weld up the engine bay and iv also come across a pretty big hole but il get that sorted aswell as its just normal gti rust

Oh dear, those valves will need a bit more than a bit of grinding paste to sort em out

What revs were you doing when the belt let go ?

it was the missus driving at the time mate, we was just pulling off on a roundabout and was only going about 15 mph when the belt let go

the damage looks like its a belt thats snapped while doing top end speed on a motorway

if i wasnt sitting in the car at the time i would have said it was indeed top end speed

she has amazed a mitsubishi rally mechanic with 15 years experience as she has also cracked the piston on the engine and unless its a diesel then the pistons dont crack like that

il pop up a pic of the piston in 2 mins when i found it on the pc

It takes some force to break a piston like that, give your missus my congratulations
I think I've only ever seen one worse than that, and that was one that'd had it's battery flattened by the owner trying to start it again, dunno what he thought the grinding noises from under the bonnet were

If I never have to open up another engine it'll be too soon, parts prices are amazing nowadays. I went to a Ford dealer for an inlet and exhaust gasket for my Zetec and was told they'd want £40...

I'm not bothering now, Zetecs are cheap enough, just bung one in and when it goes pop, shell out another £50 for a "new" one. I imagine it's not that easy for you, I don't think there were millions of rep-mobiles built with that engine for you to pillage the scrappers for

That's an impressive failure there migmag. I've noticed drag engines have a strap over the supercharger to catch it if it blows off. Maybe a strap around the whole engine would have been a good idea on that one.

Yours is impressive too Mike. Why do you reckon the piston broke like that? almost looks like the top got stuck and the conrod kept on going downwards. Not the sort of failure you'd expect when it's only hit some valves.

thats the thing with mitsu engines malcolm when they break a timing belt then you end up one a damaged cylinder head an 9 times outta 10 then you will have bent every single valve in the head

both valves had dropped into the cylinder by the looks of it and the piston just smashed them to bits and also smashed the piston as you see in the pics

the piston is only held together by the piston rings themselves, as soon as you remove the rings then the whole piston falls to pieces

needless to say the rebirth of the colt will be much faster and have more power so its turned out good in the end

only thing is the rust whole iv found as you see in the pic above from the selection of pics of the front end stripped, im not to sure how im going to weld and plate it, im trying to find out if i can get a replacement panel if anyone knows where i can get new panels from ????

I can't believe what I'm looking at there! I've never seen such devastation on an engine!

Major damage..............

That piston was probs ripped apart when the valve snopped from the stem and wedged itself at TDC,pisto being the weekest link.

Hadrian pannels from any good motor factors exept halfrauds.........
If not try your dealer you my get a shock.

Oh and if your conerned about performing the repair....
If in doubt cut it out,You may need to make up two or three pannels and interlock them

lol actually mate i had loads more pics when i first made the post but wouldnt let me have more than 10 pics so had to delete a few

you will get use to me and pics i like taking lots when i do jobs on my cars

well im interested plenty so keep it coming.

On a similar note some friends of mine had the propshaft let go on their Nova on a 1/4 mile run at Santa Pod the other weekend, I understood it caused carnage underneath. (thats Chevy not vauxhall)

another little update

iv tried getting the panels from hadrian panels and they dont stock the bits i need

has anyone got any ideas what company bodyshops use if there doing accident repairs and need to replace inner panels etc ?

im thinking i might have to get a donor glxi thats cheap and cut out the panels to use that i need, i dont really want to be plating it up so its easy to spot the repair sections under the bonnet

yep im still learning with the welder, and its no help that my welding torch on the mig i have is knackered but i cant find a replacement

this is the panels im after its both panels that have rusted so i would want both

Dont have to be spinning fast to lunch themselves with a broken belt.
One of my renault vans was on tickover without its covers undergoing prodding with the pointy driveshaft knock hunting stick but needed parking up in the field after while waiting for halfshafts, when my dog at the time decided he'd come along and jumps in the back like he used to do, stops at gate and gets out to unlock and dog jumps from the back of the load area out past the seats and out the drivers door.
Trouble is the engine was on tickover and situated between the front seats, and he managed to get his foot inserted into the cambelt. At tickover it managed to lunch 4 pistons + damage the bores, bend every valve head, crack the head in one place and smash all the camshaft buckets beyond use. He needed 2 stitches to a little cut on the pad of his paw, the little b***ard, could have at least had the decency to get properly injured... We scrapped the van after, a new short engine AND a pair of halfshafts put it out of reach.
We had another loose the belt at 4000 rpm, I just took the top off the rocker cover and seen all the smashed buckets and didnt bother again. Reminds me, must be nearly time to buy another 120 quid cambelt for current one, and for some bizzare reason I like changing it early...
