Clean and shiny often removes the natural character.
It's all about preference isn't it.. I would probably be inclined for them to be matt black worn through to the steel on the edges to give an aged well handled look.

Combination of flap disc on 4.5" grinder, then flap wheel on die grinder/drill. Better to use the flap disc length ways instead of cross ways on the material (if that makes any sense), you'll get a better finish. Try it like that, then if you want it more shiney could try some wet and dry (sanding in the same direction), then some sprayon clear laquer should finish it off nicely. Although, as said, it depends on the look you want.

That sounds intriguing - how does that come out? How hot does it need to be - just hot enough to melt the wax?
On the other suggestions - would the flap wheel leave too many corners untouched?
I've been using these (used the ones on the right so far but they seem to have extended the range - the ones on the left look interesting as well) in a die grinder but I still think you'd end up with corners untouched given that they are quite small pieces?

I'm not one for giving out praise lightly, but I'm impressed by your work hitch,as a craftsman myself I can see it's class,I particularly like the wax finish on the steel.

I have a wire brush on my bench grinder and a buffing mop on the other end, it works great but you have to be aware of it grabbing and pulling the part out of your hand. The type of wax isn't right important, I have an old tin that had a bit of furniture wax in it thats been topped up with old candles and melted together if I'm doing a small piece I dip it in if its a bigger piece I melt the wax in the tin and paint it on with an old brush, I keep an old rag to buff up the piece as its cooling. I normally just chuck bits small enough in the oven for 5 minutes when our lass has it on.
