quick welding goggles advice

Hi,

Just some advice really... new to mig welding, I bought a full face mask just cheap was from screwfix, only prob is I cant see anyhthing untill i start welding, and to be honest couldnt see to much when welding.

But the main, problem was trying to climb around under the car, the mask and me just didnt fit...

I just bought some goggles which are Flip-Up Type c/w 2" Lens to EN169 they seem loads better, just wanted to check if this means there up to standard... before I flash my eyes to bits :whistle:

Goggles are for gas welding. you need to protect your skin from the UV.

Nooooo. Goggles for gas welding only. Your face will get red raw, plus the lens are insufficient for the intensity of the light. You need a full screen.

Gas welding goggles for mig welding? Absolutely not!

You'll very quickly end up looking like this :laughing:

Seriously, the UV is incredibly intense and will redden your face within a few minutes. Even tacking up while squinting with no mask on will give you a nasty burn...don't ask me how I know. :ashamed:

They are gas welding goggles and not at all suitable for arc or mig welding, they will offer inadequate protection to your eyes, and you will burn your face,

Hi biker1981 What's protecting the rest of you face? If now't then you are going to have two nice white circles where the goggles cover and the rest of you face is goin to get a case of BAD sun burn. If the goggles are clear enough to see through then they are NOT suitable. Only time you should be able to see through is if you are using an auto darkining mask. Best thing I've bought for welding in many years. They are not that dear now. Try ebay. I use a Parweld one for about £40. Wort getting some good lighting around area as well

FREE TO GOOD home... cheap.. brand new welding goggles... bought by a numpty.

Off the net you can buy a leather face mask with built in goggles just like gas welding goggles but you can change the lenses for darker ones a mate of mine uses this type for working under the cars he works on,,

You're not a numpty, at least you asked before chancing it. :clapping:

If you had tried mig welding with just gas goggles, at best you would have got a nice peeling suntan. :laughing:

At worst arc eye, to a lesser or greater degree. :eyepatch:

As others have mentioned, auto's are quite cheap.

Welding in the situation and positions you describe will always pose problems, it's part of the fun.

I bought a cheapo one from screwfix and had the same trouble, the lens in it is a shade11 so I bought a shade 9 lens from machine mart for £3.58.

get a speedglass auto mask or like , and mount the screen section on to a pair of safety
goggles without the lense in,,then fix your silver lined,,ie space blanket type stuff,,leather hood mask on to it making shure, not, to cover the three light sensors on the screen, there you have your tight space, mask,,, sorry but no pics of mine but will send in some when i get it back,

,needs must when the devil rides,,
