Does fibreglass need an etch base?

Doing some refurbing on BF, valances.
What is best way to prep and paint FB panels?

I`ve been told yes by some painters and no by others, i`ll always use a good acid etch just to be on the safe side, cant hurt.

No it doesnt need any type of etch, and using any type of acid etch intended for metal will mean big problems as it simply wont adhere to GRP (as its not metallic).

To paint you need to very carefully degrease with panel panel wipe, repair any defects, and dependent on the surface you have either prepare for 2K primer, or for final top coat.

The etch primer I normally use (Can't remember the make, something like Mirror Finishes Ltd, got it from Hallam Motor Factors, Sheffield) is suitable for plastic & fibreglass, but it doesn't actually etch, just sticks like stuff to a blanket.

The paint itself is thinned with phosphoric acid.

You learn something new every day............be very interested to see some tech data on the acid etch designed for use on GRP? This would save the need for careful rubbing down, before priming or painting and should speed things up quite a bit.

GRP should definitely be etched as John says, there are etchs just for GRP but epoxy primer is by far the best.

Any one near wigan/warrington area who wont mind putting some of their epoxy primer over my triumph spitfire front corner valances :-)

Use Epoxy, its streets ahead of acid etch.

i made my own to prime a 16ft speedboat :laughing:

a tin of grey cellulose primer added celly thinners then mixed some fiberglass resin with styrene and added them all together .sprayed on a treat and it wouldnt scrape off

cheap as well

I've got grey celly primer, thinners and got some resin. Is the styrene important? What about activator?
What was the mixing ratio for the parts?

Would this be any good?

Its a 2k product, i.e. primer plus hardener so you need a mask.
To be honest no paint is good to breathe in, just stick to good old fresh air and you will be fine.

the primer was mixed with thinners then added the liquid resin and styrene 3 quareter primer to quarter resin . mix a small amout up and do a test piece 1st

as far as i know fibreglass is resitant to acid its certainly resistant to battery acid and i doubt the acid in the etch is as srtong as the dilute sulphuric

Not sure if you are on a windup mate but i already told you that Epoxy is a 2K product.
