Problems !!

Hi Guys,

Looking for some help with a problem on my Draper (I know, I know!!) 151 which to be fair has worked quite well up till now. Its just more or less dead. It's lit up ok but does nowt. Pressing the torch trigger produces a slight buzz and nothing else. No thermal trip indication etc. Wire feed selector works and the indicator goes from min > med > max as it should but nothing else is happening at all. Typical! All set and ready to go and Nada..

Anyone any ideas. Its not trhe fuse in the plug. There is no output current wise at the terminals etc etc. I have had the front off for a looksee for anything obvious but don't see anything. No burnt smells etc either..

You can either check back from the torch connections, tracing through until you get some dc output, if any.
Or you can trace through from the 230v ac input terminals, being very careful, to check the input route to the primary transformer is okay, then check the output, if any, of the secondary, which is of course regulated to dc. At a guess, I would suspect the output diodes on the secondary have failed, giving no output.
Either way you really need a voltmeter and know how to use it, and take great care when checking the 230v input side. If you have any doubts, get a sparky mate to look at it.

Thanks.. Tested as suggested and here's the finding / diagnosis.

The little panel is all fine with input and output voltages all as should be. The trigger on the torch is all ok as I can get wire feed now.. (Dont ask!) There was still no power though. Tested out the best I could to find the little 12v 3 amp !! relay not triggering.... ? So no feed to main transformer.

Thought about unsoldering it from the panel to test as I have a 12volt supply but couldn't find the solder sucker. AArrgh!! So I smacked it (gently) with a small screwdriver and Lo and behold. Click, click...Aha! Tried again and yep. Sparks! I had a welder again. So I re assembled the thing and when finished tested again to find.....No sparks!!.. No welder again...

Conclusion is a duff relay..

Meanwhile my new Clarke 160 arrives tomorrow from Weldequip..

I think I will sell the troublesome Draper as 'spares or repair' as suggested and spend anything I get for it on a refillable gas bottle..

get a relay for it only 3 or 4 quid then you can sell it working and make more then your 4 quid back

Problems!!

I've stuck the Draper on Epay, with the now redundant trolley I bought a couplke of months ago. The new Clarke (& its a Clarke trolly!"!) welder is a bit too big for it.. Ive burned the bridges with it now and hopefully someone else can take it on and sort it out. I'd rather be restoring my old Scoots and cars..

It will be a cheepo for someone no doubt...
