In an effort to help people out wanting to learn the art of welding, i would like people to post any links to local colleges or training centres that run welding training course, then hopefully once there are a good few links to various colleges around the country. Malcolm will find a little time to create a custom page and place the links there, making it easier for members to find a suitable local welding course.

Cambridge Regional College do City & Guilds 3267 Intro welding.
£320 (16 wk evening course) but you get your ticket.
You can choose Arc, Mig, Tig, or Oxy Acet.

These couple the thurock tech offers a proper ABC course, where writle is a few evenings to teach the basics, but offers bolt on courses for more advanced techniques.

Thats bloody expensive, the Sussex college courses are £100-ish each and you also get your ticket, but only C+G. The college get a lot more money from the C+G people for every student that passes.

I had noticed there does seem to be a vast difference in price, i would have thought if they are running the same course it would have cost the same money.

Edinburgh's Telford college run evening classes in Mig,Tig,MMA and O/A but they are having problems with the gas manifold system at the moment so cannot run any but hopefully soon they will be up and running.

A quick bit of advice for anyone starting welding with a course. The course will probably teach you using steel that is 4-5mm and up. This takes away some of the problems you may encounter. When you have it sussed a bit, ask to have a go with a small set and thinner material.

My course was on a Murex 450 amp machine but for the last two weeks I used a single phase one and 0.6 wire.

Im sure they would if they could get away with it! they have a central blast walled storage area with co2,argon,acetylene and oxygen cylinders in it away from the building and they have manifolds and pipelines that carry said gases into the appropriate areas and mix them etc but there having problems as whoever specced the equipment didnt tell the installation company so all the fittings etc are wrong sizes,threads etc and the place was built to a price with no follow up service so the college are liable for it!

Hi Cob,
It does seem more than other areas. Everything seems to be relatively expensive in Cambridge - you just get used to it.
If you think of it as £20 a session, it doesn't seem quite so bad given the cost of consumables, insurance, admin etc. Certainly the courses for £100 to £200 represent excellent value if you still get your ticket.
I had to take a course somewhere because I didn't really know what I was doing and I want anything I make / fix to be safe.
