Log splitter help

I'm planning on making a log splitter and so far the only issue I have is the splitting blade so far im planning on taking a bit of 20mm plt and just cutting a point in it. Don't know how well this will work though. The other option i can think of involves me taking a bit of tube grinding out the sides hammering it into a point and re welding it.

Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated.


Btw I'm new to this forum and the whole engineering scene just started a design engineer apprenticeship and bought a new 3 phase mig welder so im still learning.

I used 2 bits of 10mm plate..... like this....one cut about 15mm smaller than the other, then welded together and ground up afterwards.

Why does your splitter head have what is effectively a stop plate on it? The head needs to be able to pass further through the log in most cases. Yes it will split simple straight grained or easy split wood like sycamore but its going to struggle on every thing else.

I would have thought, By that point the wood be split enough to ride over it and split it completely.

also depends on the length of logs if they are only short the width of the v will split them all the way down

Not done much wood splitting have you?

Its only a simple hand operated one, for me Grandad. Only uses it for the odd stubborn one.

No point having the wedge longer than the travel of the ram. Logs generally cut to suit the smallish wood burner.
Its quite a steep wedge, so not had any problems, split everything thats been put in it so far.

Could make the wedge like that, just without the cap plate.

I thought the cap plate only looked tacked,so was possibly just holding the wedge in position for final welding.
