sandblasting gates

I need to sandblast/clean up some rusty gates for my parents and was wondering about the best way to approach it. I have been looking at the blasting gun pictured below and then buy some blasting grit. Questions are :- 1. is this gun suitable, 2. what blasting grit would you recommend, 3. do i need a specialist breathing / eye mask, 4. after blasting would they need treating with a 'rust remedy' or does the blasting do away with the need, 5. recommendations for under coat and black top coat

Sandblasting a horrible job as I'm sure others will agree.
My recommendation is take them to a blast cleaning firm and get them to do the work finishing off with coat of primer. The cost will be less than the equipment needed without all the hassle.
If you insist on doing yourself you will need a big compressor - 3HP just runs the small gun in my cabinet so at least that size and preferably lot bigger. The sand (you can't actually use sand as against H&S rules) gets everywhere. I mean everywhere !

Ive just completed a job refurbing two sets of gates for a customer and had them sand blasted and primed. Cost me £70 in total, i know your in Stoke but i would imagine the prices would be around the same where ever you go

4) After blasting, they definitely need coating with something as soon as possible. Surface rust will start appearing quite quickly.

5) I just use bog standard chassis black enamel these days for most things which just need a lick of paint for protection. Cheap, primer is optional as it does bind well on its own, flows well and gives good coverage. Avoid Hammerite. It's naff.

i wouldnt bother trying with that suction gun or even a pressurised pot fitted with a 3mm jet using a 14cfm comp there time wasting even using a 6mm jet at 90 cfm . cheaper to get them done at a blasters and primed
