Automotive crimping tool

Morning all. I know there is a few automotive wording people around well I have a tool question.

I'm after a crimping tool for terminals

My current method of pliers isn't consistent and struggle to do them properly with the cheep general use automotive ones.

Would like links to ratchet type (not paying vehicle wiring products money) but I do use a fair bit so happy to pay a bit

I solder those, then crimp them over with pliers. Then heat shrink.

why dont u just use the barrel insulated ones with standard ratchet crimps is there a limited space issue ??

Go here and buy one of these tools.....they're made for the job, there are expensive versions, but I have this tool, and it works brilliantly

You can have problems soldering this type of connector, I had one once where it cost us a rally, it had been over soldered (very easy to do) the solder had traveled up the wire (capilary action)and caused a shear point inside the insulation of the wire because it was on a multi plug everything looked and felt ok,but it just had to be the feed for the coil, it took ages to find because the break was not actually at the connector, but several mm up the wire

That's similar to what I've got - but I paid nearly £40 !
Once you have the proper tool you realise how much better the crimps are than any other method.
BTW I only crimp on vehicle wiring as too have had soldered joints fail due to vibrations.

Thanks for the pointers will try the £9 ones next time I need to put an order in. I had Seen them but next to others that all seamed to be £40+ was concerned they would be rubbish

I thought exactly the same, was very surprised how good they were for the money....to be honest, I don't think you need buy any other tool. They also work on bullet connectors, and different sizes of spade terminal.

I have a couple of different pairs of the basic crimping tool for uninsulated type terminals, these crimp one part at a time as opposed to some of the ratchet type that can do both wire and insulation in one go. As crimp quality can vary, some tags curl perfectly every time while others start curling one side and flatten the other. If this happens I turn the crimp around and start the other tag curling then insert the wire and crimp. A bit of a ballache but the devil is in the detail and as Normspanners pointed out this can be the difference in reliability or winning and losing!

I would. It's not something I'm in rush for but got some plans for the truck and would be much Easier if I had proper tool!

I would say if you are going to be crimping inserts for multiplugs get a good quality ratchet tool as it does the whole thing in one go, and they will look exactly the same as a factory job.

The crimps will be uniform and you won't have any issues fitting them in the plugs.

Also when using bigger mulitplugs you can't afford to make mistakes because cutting one wire shorter to redo may ruin the job.

Insulated crimps are great but they don't look as nice or professional as non insulated ones.

As also mentioned a decent ratchet tool rolls the ends in to grip the wire insulation.

I agree, but as a good selection of insulated crimps are a stock item at work I tend to use those :whistle:

That's the case for me as well but sometimes multi plug is only way
