Home built tool chest

Seeing Malcolms thread about toolboxs reminded me to post pictures of the one that I made. I thought I was doing quite well with the pictures but keep forgetting to take a picture of the completed item. Anyway...

After looking around for ages I finally decided to make my own toolbox rather than buy one because I couldn't find anything that would fit in the space that I had and nothing had the number of drawers that I wanted.

So I found a local metal fabricator to fold a number of drawers for me at a very reasonable cost:

Then I made up the side panels using the Cosmic Yellow Brick:







Then I started to tack weld the frame together using the smaller drawers as spacers:



Then I tack welded the rest of the frame together:

I decided to use blue hammer paint. Since the best finish could only be achieved by spraying it on, but I don't have a compressor and spray gun, I resorted to the next best alternative - a fence sprayer. This is the paint prep area:

And the aftermath (I didn't realise that grass and thinners weren't the best of combinations):



The tool chest is now fully assembled and on wheels. I'll put pictures up when I get a chance.

Droped some petrol from my old guzzi in a corner of our garden still got no grass there after three years...nice tool box though

It's all mild steel. The drawers and a couple of other bits were fabbed up for around £200. Add in 12 pairs of full extension runners, 6 heavy duty castors (seriously OTT for their purpose in life) and steel sheet at another £150 odd the costs worked out quite well.

Considering that I went from mig welding with a Cosmo welder to tig with the IFL unit without any previous tig experience I found it very easy to use. I got to the point where I understood the features well even though I didn't use all of them, and even mananged to produce good, well penetrated welds without having to use very much filler rod. Setting the tig up is so much easier than the Cosmo, and I also felt that the tig gave me more control over the welds than mig does.

It will come as no surprise that I bought the IFL on a recommendation from Weldequip and, even though it cost a lot more than I originally planned to spend on a GYS set up, I have had no regrets about it.

I allso recently bought an IFL Machine ,having previously had use of a gys tig .i can confirm that the IFL is indeed a better machine

Keep thinking about geting a small A/C D/C single phase tig myself, be handy for them five minute jobs, when iv always got the wrong torch/tugstens/collets/setings on the other machines, liked the look of those IFL units think they look cool
