Hardfacing.

Evening all,
A friend has been asking me about hardfacing some of his farm/construction machinery buckets etc,ive never done any hardfacing and dont know much about it,could anyone give me some idea of what its about as he's got some old stuff i can practice on first.

If you need to build up first use 7018 SMAW or 70-S-6 wire.
Stoody 31, is very good choice for sandy and abrasive soil.
Here are a couple methods on how to protect a bucket. Might want to consider letting the equipment wear, then just replace as needed, or think about tacking / welding wear stripes out of AR plate. Hard facing rod is expensive and time consuming

Basically, cover the hight wear point with weld, but using a hard facing rod, such as murex hardex.

The thing to remember, is the application of the parts being hardfaced. Theres a variety of different rods to suit varying hardnesses. Sometimes you need to build layers of diffent rods to stop cracking if the final surface is particully hard.

The oerlikon website has a half decent decscription of their rods, might give you some idea.

You can use stellite hardfacing rods too. You may well have to put a buttering layer on first - a 312, Nicrex type rod, or somesuch. Otherwise the hardfacing may crack. You may also have to preheat.

Should have found these pictures before I posted last time. He mounted all the hydraulic cylinders through 3/8-inch plate, took no time to oblong the pin holes :vsad:

And if you notice on his web site how he mounts the backhoe to the tractor :vsad:

Intresting you say about the craking, I had the problm of cracking, phoned and spoke to a guy at the lincolns tech department......Said that buttering layers were not nessary, hardface from all there range is designed with cracking in mind, this relevies stress between the two layers, as movement will always be at diffrent rates between LCMS and a high point carbon hardface which I guess makes sence.

It will crack if its cooled too fast.....drafts are enough to have this effect apparently. I've just been reading some stuff from Stellite.

The cracking is called check cracks and yes they sort of relieve stresses and providing you can see them its fine. Its when they are underneath the bead that the problems come, the beads can spall off.

Sometimes buttering can cause problems, if you use very soft weld metal, 7018s etc, its a bit like putting a sheet of sponge rubber under glass. If you put your weight on it the rubber will give and the glass will break. If you use hard rubber it wont allow the movement but it stays solid. There are specific rods for build up, usually contain some alloying, Mo, Ni or Cr.

cant remember who it was now AL that post is a while old now, I seam to spend a fair few days a year pestering the technical departments of companys.... It was regards to wire I do believe, cant even remember what I was doing, could have been something hideous like a concrete crusher......

Personally I always now butter, tho I was told at the time I was told its not always nessary....... BTW who makes Nexus welding wires?

wanted some 1.6 metal cored PDQ, only make I could get was nexus, hmmm were see what it runs like........
