runnach thanks for your interest,its just that with a shipyard background 6013 is my preferred stick.now and again on site i will use cel rods, fox cel in my case.they are great rods for root but just too noisy and smokey for our shop.i have mentioned 6013 rods on stateside boards and near got lynched :laughing:

.they really are a versatile rod,this came from a 12 ins butt i did a while ago,just an attempt at close up.lads i can explain the way i go about root filler and cap,but only that there are lots of methods,and mistakes. :laughing:

Hi f/j,

I agree, cellulosic's are very fumey with that tad bit more noise to boot, but the bizzo if you want to ensure good root pene, faster speed of travel too if time matters? I kinda like the Bohlers for rooting.

I have to admit though, you can't beat the tig for the majestic touch, more calmer, and deliberate, not to mention that wee bit less fume, with little noise, following the blue lady with less haste!!

Not sure what you mean when you stated "the lynching" was this because our over the pond friends perhaps root and cap with Cels?

Would be interesting to read your methods of putting in the root, then cap, always handy to see another's perspective.

senior moment runnach,i thought i had shown a 6013 root,they were tig,my apologies .i suppose the answer to your question then is i had been doing a lot of hot water pipes, and they were all very light pipe,thats usually tig root,so thats what i had been doing.heres hot water pipe,pain in the **** :laughing:

Gotcha on you're explanation above.......cheers. I can't say I have done much of what you are doing on carbon, loads on 316 S/S tho.........purge dams ect, now that is a pain in the erse too!!

Nice welding.....

6013 are a very nice rod to use, much easier to use than 7018 Basic rods too and the end result is far nicer too, however the Basic rods offer a greater ultimate tensile strength and higher impact properties. The 6013 rutiles are good general purpose rods.

I used to use the Nu 5 Cel's for rooting, they we're very good.Are they still available?

Please enlighten us, oh great one!

If you don’t mind, when you get some free time could you give us a blow by blow description of how, and why you do things from the start?

Question 1
While running your root pass when you’re getting ready to stop, (running out of rod), do you punch the rod through into the pipe, (breaking the arc) forcing a keyhole? Or do you just stop, and grind, (feather) your stop before continuing on?

Question 2
Which technique do you prefer? The whip, (first picture) or the weave, (2nd picture).

Question 3
When and if you get in trouble, (to hot / to cold) do you change techniques, if so to what?

flange what angle do you bevel the pipe? I’ve been going with 37 1/2°. Yours looks almost 45°!

i think its much the same as yours puddles,the more i think of it i am convinced a heavier land would benefit you,try 2.5 root gap 2.5 rod on 6010.if you decide to try 13s burn them dc electrode neg right out. f/j

Are you sure? 2.5mm gap, with a 2.5mm rod!!!!!!!!!!! :confused:

Those pictures I posted today, was my first attempt at 2.5mm, (3/32-inch) gap, with just a touch less than 2.5mm land. All the other attempts were at 2.77812mm, 7/64th-inch) gap with just a touch less land. I found it much easier to control with a 2.5mm gap using 3.5mm rod. I have a set of pipes tacked ready for another try set up the same way, the next set I’ll increase the land width.

puddles that keyhole shot answers your question,coming to this tack the ends are blued with a grinder,this helps you to break through just in front of the keyhole,this gives an unbroken bead.as you reach the 10 oclock and 2 oclock position on the fill runs up the amps 10 15 and have your rod pointing back.although you are pushing you are dragging the rod tip.this is another advantage over 7018,you can bend the rod into a sweeping arc and not lose the flux. f/j

f/j you are nothing short of an artiest with this pipe welding!

I got to use a Lincoln Ranger 300-G with “chopper technology” today. Friend of mine came over to help me with my gooseneck adapter project. He wanted me to try his new machine. I tacked a couple piece of pipe together. He watched the inside of the pipe as I ran the root with 6010. With him watching the inside of the pipe, and the angle of the rod all at the same time, he discovered I was laying the rod down to much! When I kept the rod perpendicular to the pipe in the flat position I didn’t get any grapes! I have suspected this, but was not sure. Can’t wait to complete this gooseneck project so I can get back to trying my newfound technique! :welder:
