hey, is there such a thing as a arc welding rod to weld aluminum, I know with mig you must use argon gas, but is there anything for arc, my welder is a ac or dc current high, low settings and its 295 amps 230 volt, thanks

yes there is
they dont give the best quality weld but if its a repair and all you have is a stick set they will get you out of trouble.

MWA do one we have sold it in the past , runs from ac or dc comes in 3.25mm comes in a two kilo pack

my welder teacher told me stick welding aluminium should only be used in an emergency

I have welded lots of alum with 1/8" stick rod. It is best used on thicker castings and with DCEP which is DC reverse poliarity.

Found these babies in work last night and had to give them a go. They are stubbs 48 3.2mm rods.Weld No. 1 was at 130 ish A* No.4 was down to 105A.

Couldn't see much while welding.

Affraid the pictures are in the wrong order.

Brings back memories, horrible fumey sickly process using MMA, Mig comes close second.

You're right there before i knew it the place was full of smoke.
It was nice to give them a go but i think i'll stick to the TIG.

What set did you run it on? they should be run on dc positive around 85amps with the the electrode held vertical with a short arc to clean the weld you can use a 10% caustic soda solution, the electrode contains 12% silicon, ex stubbs welding rep those where the days!

I did it with a cebora ac/dc tig using dc electrode +ve and maybe too many amps @ 100+.

The rod wasn't vertical and maybe the arc was too long.

After reading the previous posts, when i found the rods i was interested in just giving it a go to see what it was like.

I reckon the rods have been sitting in the cupboard for at least 10 years.

DIY... thanks for the info i'll bear that in mind if i have to use them for some serious work.
