I decided I wanted a load leveller but didn't want to buy one so I made one!
It's been made using whatever I had to hand, I bought the chain from B&Q (250kg load apparently, £4.28 per metre) and the cheapy shackles (£3). The threaded rod is M20 and cost me £7 with nut for 1 metre. The rest I had. The main box section needed shaving down slightly with the grinder, particularly a few mm away from the corner on each side side. The sliding part needed the welded seam filing down.
I think the material is:
Main piece 40x40x4 (might be 5)
Slider 50x50x4 (might be 5 also)
End pieces and handle 50x5
With the land rover engine on it in the picture (heavy, cast iron) I could wind the handle with no effort at all, the weight of the handle was enough to move it. That was before I even greased it. The handle is off a cheapy hand winch that I broke the other day.
