Welding rods

There seems to be a lot of interest in ark welding lately just thought it might be a good idea to have a thread on welding rods different brands and different types of Rod and what their used for and what you think of them
there is a lot of information on the fourm about rods but it scattered all over the place

back to the point of the thread, and your right scarecrow its well worth its own thread. my favourite has to be the esab version of the 6013, nice weld, self lifting slag, good for all positions. BOC cheap one the least favourite and the weldability ones are ok but not as nice as vodex or the esab ones

could everybody also tell us where you get them from aswell coz thats where im struggling, even my welding equipment specialist only sells their own brand of rod

weldequip will do a nice deal on welding rods, but carrage might be a bit of a killer

Lincoln Fleetweld 47, 3/32 and 1/8", 6013 and 7018 from Home Depot ($7-$10 per 5lb). Good general-purpose rods although the 7018's need to be kept dry.

Weldit (Hobart) 7014, 1/16" (1.6mm). Excellent rod on thin metal. Got off ebay.

Have some small (1.6-2mm) 6013-like rods that are just ok. Would like to find some nice ones in the smaller sizes.

I find that a pain in the ass as well probably why I have so many different brands of rods most hardware here carry a small amount of rods mostly 6013brands have improved in the last few years my main welding supplier is about an hour's drive from me they have a fairly good selection other than that I fish the odd box out of the bay of e

I use bohlers across the board, 6013s phenoix, which cross over to a vodex type rod, the 308L, 307, 312, the UTP bohlers on 7016, and cast rods. Esab 7018 OK 48.00 (tho looking for an alternative) and Lincoln 7024s......

These all come from my suplier at Basildon Essex..... DWS......

My favourites would-be HILCO extra red 6013 but have two go to a welding supplier to get them here. OERLIKON citofix fincord m or overcord c 6013 . overcord c are nice for out of position especially verticals fincord m are very easy to use most of them are €10 to €14 for 2.5 kg I also have superpro ezetrode-m which are reasonable
and was given a box of union uz-6 6013 to try out they also seem very nice just as well as the ones I bought of the guy superweld 6013 keep dropping the Ark which is a pain

I used one pack of the mixed rods and have got a new pack unopened (offers please). Then saw the light and got some Murex 6013 nice rods.

Are they just offering Nexus rods then BJ? We've started getting our supplies from them, but i've not ordered any rods off them yet - just Mig wire - but that was Lincoln Supramig.

I know they only have Weldability and Nexus catalogues, but I assumed they stocked more than that. A bit disappointing if they don't.

Have you asked what else they've got?

yup, i phoned them up and asked them "what makes of arc rods do you stock" and the woman on the phone replied "we do nexus but weve got lots of different types of them" so i asked the price of a boc of 2.5mm 6013s and it was about £26 for a pack (6 cartons she said), i didnt ask what else they do but this is their website:http://www.leengate.com/- nexus must be their main supplier (probably more profit!) :laughing:

I think we got a dose of Nexus rods way back (not what was ordered) it may have just been a bad batch but, they were horrible rods to use, best way to describe them in use was akin to "arc blow" damn things would dance around depositing weld every where but where it should have fused to. As above, maybe a bad batch, I would ask for a few samples prior to making a firm order.

I've got a box of t&r truweld 6013 not bad but not great 1/2 a box oerlikron fincord m much better rod, but they dont seem as nice as the mirrorspeed's i learnt to weld with years ago i've email boc but no reply about new version of them? or why they stoped selling them, probley toxic all the best things are.

Mirrorspeed, weren't they an iron powder rod? Seem to remember doing loads of 'rolly polly' pipe butt weld caps with them as an apprentice. Could run an 8 (4mm) at 200+ amps round a downhand slip-on flange in no time at all. Great rods. W/A

We used to do alot of capping with them, They were great rods :clapping:

Hi folks,

chrisg3103 kindly donated me some Phoenix 6013/E6013 2.5's that he had, I didn't realise that they were Bohler till I Googled the name. We had a quick bash at using them with my Powercraft and actually got some manageable beads. Chris tried the Halford SIP's and also found them difficult to use. I gave him the remaining pack of SIP's to see if they are any use on his machine.

Chris, the next time your over I'll ply you with some tea or coffee - had the in-laws visiting. :rolleyes:

I'll post photos of the resulting beads later in my own thread.
