Hi, I'm new to this posting on a forum thing, so if I do this all wrong, let me know. This is a look at my first day back at work, a bit of re-furb work on a crusher (it should look like the one in my photo album when it's done) The teeth need building up and hard facing ,I started this and then found a crack, so I burned that out and welded it ,then back to the teeth. Built up with mild steel, not a favourite job of mine but it looks OK once it's ground up and hard faced (see next post)

I forgot I've all ready burned out the bosses and preped the holes ready for new ones. Here are the teeth ground and hard faced. The hard facing wire costs a fortune.

Surprised how thin the hinges are on that pulveriser - I'd expect something more substantial considering the work they do.

so hardfacing protects the steel underneath from abrasion? do you put the hardface welds over every bit of just a series of lines everywhere?

Yes there to protect the steel .The hard facing wire costs a fortune. So you would put lines or a pad of weld at the points that wear fastest (point of teeth, edges of plate) and then circles , crosses ,lines in-between.

Hi Pete, I think they are about 25mm.Could be a hi yield steel (501, 701 etc) I don't know I (we) didn't make this one

That hardfacing's spatter central! Is it always like that on the Mig Tino?

Also on the hardface, do you butter first with the MIG??, not an MMA man I take it Tino

Yes always, it's never nice to use always difficult, snags in the tip for no apparent reason. I could probably get better results with a different gas, but we don't do enough to make it worth looking at. Also the looks are not critical it just has to be well hard, ten mins crushing concrete it'll not have one bit of spatter on it.

Probably me being numb, but I'm not sure what you are asking. It was all built up (buttered?) with mild steel done with the MIG. I still do some MMA welding but as the years have gone by less and less. We even do some site work with MIG now, used to be all MMA, it's just to slow.

Ahhh if you've built up with M/S I don't think you would need to butter, something like Hardox when welded with the stick tends to be welded first with a softer more ductile rod, to prevent the hardface simply drooping off, I'm not sure if MIGs the same I genuinely don't know, I weld Alot of plant but nearly all with the stick....

Ah now I understand. Yes the same goes for both processes. If I was hard facing onto the Hardox I would butter it with a stainless first. I miss welding with stick, mostly it just gets used to weld the odd cast iron job (nickel rods), or if there is some thing I cant get the mig to.

i work in a foundry here in sheffield where we make things similar to that crusher, i don't have too many pics though...

here's a casting which is a screw press head (i think it's the largest screw type press ever made!), it weighed in at around 560tonnes when we cast it, me and my three mates removed around 200tonnes of head (a reservoir to feed the casting as it cools to ensure a solid casting), the three blokes on top are smoothing down the cuts that we made with oxygen lance and 3' oxy/propane straight hi-lo cutters, they're using arc-air sets to remove the surplus.

and here's the casting going to a machine shop about two miles away for some work doing

nice stuff. I used to work in Magna and have been inside the furnace. Was also lucky enough to go round Alwalk and Rowntree rolling mill.
