vertical up's

Hi guys

do you have any good advice on welding verticals going up

im good with most other out of position welds but i just cant rap my head around vertical ups not with stick or mig with stick its not maintaing the arc its the weld pool im having a problem with im useing 6011's 1/8 on 1/4'' steel with about 80 amps and it works well in any other position

and advice would be really helpful thanks

try using a weave pattern and remeber to hold it at the corners for a second to prevent undercut and to keep the puddle uniform because for each weave the center is getting traveled on twice as much if you dont hold it for a second in the corners the middle seems to build up higher

Try a triangular pattern, like a xmas tree, and yes pause at the edges, works for me

Here's an instruction video (12 mins long) that I found a few weeks ago, this guy talks about vertical welding and how to push the weld pool up. I don't know how relevant it is or even if it's any use, but anyway the link is below.

The type of rod you are using can make a big difference. A very runny flux is good for vertical it doesn't drag the weld metal out. Lots of different rods say all position but it's worth experimenting (or getting some advice) to find out which do what best.

Apples And Pears! Chant this as you weld with the rod at the edges of the weld as the Apples & the Pears come out! Adjust your power until your timing coincides with your chanting!

YOU WILL get some stange looks, but, hey, it's worth it!!

Hi muggins

I had a look at a few of the videos a tonywelding
and i found the ones about different grades of steel
and their weldability very informative for someone
like me that hasn't done a welding course.

I was taught with a slow t-i-c-k, t-o-c-k, like a longcase clock, same results I guess. W/A

you are using a 6011 rod this is a celulose rod used for predominantly vertical down welding although you can use them in almost all positions.
use a 6013, or if you have a DC welder use a 7016 or 7018 on DCEP. dont go in a triangle or you will be prone to slag inclusions as you travel over the top of the triangle (if you get what i mean) use a J shape or a U shape, dont weld in the middle weld on the sides of the fillet build up a nice pool then whip it across to the other side you dont want to spent anytime in the middle or the pool gets too heavy and runs down.
what Tino put is wrong the flux wont pull the weld out. A 'fast freeze' rod is normally used for vertical up hence 7016/7018.

I'd like to see you weld vertical up with a rod that has a heavy flux, say a Murex Satinx. Give it a go then tell me I'm wrong!

I prefer the triangle method, but eh try all methods and see which one suits you the best, and do try different types of sticks as well, until you are happy with your own results

Not one welder welds the same, I prefer to use a 7018, but at other times i would be using the Murex 6013, Esab 6013, and few others, and the worst rod i have ever used is the Murex.

My method of welding a vert fillet is a very tight arc and weave, (my phrase is Donald Duck Daffy Duck)

What I tend to do is run the root in on DC+ amps about 100amps then drop down to about 60-80amps for the cap on DC-, But this really depends on the rod and the state of the steel.

I think I need to explain my comment on the Murex Satinx I made it sound like I thought they are not good rods, true for vertical, but for down hand they are (in my opinion) one of the very best 6013's. They are classed as all position but for vertical a better Murex 6013 all position rod would be the Vodex. I have always found Murex to be good quality along with all the other top brands such as Oerlikon ,Bohler and Esab ,as I said experiment or get advice as rods from the same manufacture in the same class will each have their own characteristics and my reference to the Satinx was to illustrate this.
