yeah it is an interesting gearbox though i will take photos and also upload them for others if they care to copy the build fine by me
english improvised engineering is kinda interesting in its own right as gives other ideas to re engineer things much better a bit like myford did with spareys idea for the gearbox on the myford ml7s

There's no way on earth to judge general condition from that photo. Besides, that looks in practically pristine nick compared to half of my acquisitions.

though i do wonder which one has the wear and looks a bit tired would it be the lathe or the poster
wasnt a bad price for it to be honest and a little rust and cleaning is expected
though i will take a much closer look before i part with cash

nope comes under discription of item being sold if the seller hasnt quoted it correctly then the buyer has the right to refuse the item and wont get a mark against them for it

Be very interested on more details on that extra gearbox. It looks like they have mounted the standard changewheels along one shaft and simplified the complicated standard system of setting it up for different feed rates.

depending on condition i may do a strip down so can gain the cog that is being used
Looks an interesting home made attempt at a Norton quick change gearbox.
I think youll have some work to make it operate correctly. Most of these type gearbox rely on detents in a front cover to keep the swinging selector arm in place and gears in mesh. There doesnt seem to be anything to do this on this setup. It appears the user has relied on the weight of the swinging arm to keep gears in mesh. That would explain the apparent polish on the larger change wheels where I imagine some slip has been occuring.

ive had some extra info on this lathe as i did ask for it from them and i do believe ive found the original owner of the lathe on the net
The cabinet is 39"wide, 35" tall and 17 1/2" deep. The lathe is 48" long (with the added gear box), 18"wide and 22" tall. There are four or five extra motors of differing speeds and a few other bits and bobs of which I haven't a clue as to what they are or what their function is however they seem to go with the lathe. The bolt turned with a 14 spanner though they are slightly smaller so possibly imperial measurements.
any ideas of what spanners i need to dismantle some of the lathe from the bed and also take the motor off just to lesson the weight as i need to strip down a little to transport it with an estate car normally take an adjustable spanner and a set of spanners
also to dismantle the cabinet as well

.Most of the bolts are whitworth so you need a set of whitworth spanners. There are also a few af and ba bolts as well but you will get away with af spanners and an adjustable. You will also need a set of af allen keys.
I would advise you to download the manual and see how it goes together. Here is a link to the pdf.

Despite it's small size it's quite a heavy item - the lathe alone is 200 lb plus the weight of the cabinet, the extra gearbox and the motors. It would take two strong men to lift the lathe complete. Your car will be well laden so I would suggest a van or a trailer as it will be much easier loaded and will save a return trip for the base.

I keep an old candlewick bedspread in the back of mine for that reason. Saying that though, if I ever put owt with oil in there, I can guarantee it'll try it's damnedest to empty its content in the back no matter what I do. I've become used to mine smelling like gearbox or hydraulic oil most of the time. Gave it up as a bad job in the end trying to keep oil where it should be.
