intrested in getting a gun like that , are they really £70 upwards ? doesnt seem great value , anyone seen a better deal? not intrested in the shutz gun can ones

I've got one like that, its its blue in colour (I cant see the pics) there is a plastic one you can buy which is much cheaper

I bought mine with the wax, it'couldn't be that dear as I wouldn't have bought it........think my wax oil kit came direct.........not sure tho........

Once you start using a long thin probe the pressure requirement rises significantly. As a result, the normal screw on can that the wax comes in is no longer strong enough. Shutz guns normally have a vent hole to stop over pressurising. Once I tired blocking the hole and the can bulged dangerously. I was very lucky it did not go pop. My Shutz gun came with a short flexible probe that was to thick for many of the holes I wanted to put it through.

While those pressure pots are alot more expensive I guess they do the job. I have considered trying to find a bit of pipe with an ID that matches the OD of the screw on cans. If a plate was welded across the end it could then be used as a sleeve over the can to prevent a burst. But by the time I have messed about it may be cheaper to buy the correct tool.

We were chatting about these guns just last week. The Sealey metal one is £70 and is totally overpriced but it's the only DIY one out there. It's just a pot with a trigger and the gun is just an alu tube with the end crushed to atomise the wax.

Sealey do a cheaper plastic one for £40 but I'm not sure if it's pressure based or uses suction.

Schutz guns won't work upside down and the probe will only work with light waxes, not the thick heavy bodied wax.

There was a £25 pressure gun being advertised by some small company, spent half an hour last week trying to find link but with no luck.

If I knew what I know now I would have made one. I would use a plumbing valve instead of a trigger and you can buy the atomising nozzles on fleabay. The pot you can use an alu fuel bottle or something but the outlet needs to have a tube that goes to the bottom of the pot so it collects wax from the bottom.

in the past ive sprayed that waxoil with a paraffin gun. I just warmed it up first.

I just got it out of the hedge, not pretty as you can see. I hope I spent no more than a few minutes making it. I guess I made it 1983-1985 and it was in daily use spraying the back of welded in bit's for many years.
Picture isn't very good, you connect the central fitting to an air line, with a tap inline. The bit of tube you can see sticking up has the nylon tube on it.

There is a steel tube welded in low down out of view. Originaly I had a bit of hose on the tube and a blow gun with an extension tube on it, I used it to squirt waxoyl around the inner edges after putting door skins
on. It worked but as you can imagine a blow gun didn't shut off well, I have a blow gun somewhere that
has an inner valve spring on it, it does work but it's hard work on yer thumb.

Then I had to waxoyl and I wasn't allowed to drill any extra holes. I added the pickup tube, which is a bit of
steel brake tube and goes nearly to the bottom of the pot. The tube has several 1/16" of an inch holes
drilled around it pretty near the top[inside the pot]; think of a carb emulsion tube.

I stick a blow lamp on it to thin the waxoyl.

The nozzle is rusty! The nozzle is a bleed nipple which I ran a grinder round and a female brake fitting.

I would still use a schutz gun for most of the external spraying, but if you need to get in somewhere with less access or up a chassis leg I use the pot.

On the subject of these, I've been trying to use an underseal gun, with good results as long as I don't extend the tube. However I need to extend the tube as it won't quite reach some of the areas - and when I do, nothing at all comes out. Reading the above it seems that maybe my underseal gun just isn't suitable.

However, I do have this, which I think is intended for spraying degreaser or the like. It's quite a fine nozzle, and the red body is plastic and unscrews. Does anyone have an opinion on whether, if I try this with some thinned-down Waxoyl, I might achieve anything other than exploding it and covering myself and the shed with Waxoyl?

It could get into just about enough bits to get some wax in. The one I've been using does get a decent coverage, but I can't quite reach some areas.

It does depend how thick the wax is, the Dinitrol thin stuff sprays easy, the thick "HS" stuff doesn't. Heating it makes a big difference, I heat mine in a saucepan of hot water, leaving the Dinitrol inside it's original container. I don't know what the Waxoil stuff is like.

I need one of those later in the spring.

I wonder if i can modify an FLG3 devilbiss spray gun that i cant get a nozzle for .

Worth looking into.......
