Cheap AC/DC TIGs with long warranties...

Kinda figured maybe a thread that covers cheaper TIGs instead of starting a new thread for each one that comes along may be logical, perhaps too logical, but here goes...

So these welders don't cost a lot at all and have FIVE YEAR warranties - I haven't found out about the terms of the warranties yet but thought I'd post here for info and any comments/experience anyone may have on these. Feel free to add any TIGs to this thread and I'll try and remember to do the same as I come across them.

The Stahlwerks are from Germany so could be a bit of an issue for any warranty returns regards shipping costs. The Jasic is UK supplied.

Dunno about you guys but these look like super prices for 5-year warrantied kit to me...

I'd love to get a V205-T but the funds just ain't there...

I think that's the big question.

A warranty that requires something to be sent abroad (e.g to China) at your expense is pretty poor. And that's if the firm still exists and actually honors it - can you be sure the companies are genuine, and will still be around in 5 years under the same name?

Exactly ! It's better to buy a used machine with a brand you trust with no warranty than a new machine with a Micky mouse warranty with a brand that puts em together with blue tack.

the warranties need looking at carrefully as they are not comprehensive-ie its only some parts that have the 5year guarantee I think. Have a look on this site, scroll down until you get to Stealth TIG kit-2year guarantee, I have dealt with migtigarc and they gave good service-the stealth sets are a new line for them AFAIK.

I saw some Jasic welders for sale at a BOC depot yesterday.............They said it had a 5 year warranty that was being backed up by a company in this country.

From ebay the Stahlwerk warranty is 2 years warranty followed by 3 years "durability extended guarantee" ?

I see that both welders are made in Shenzen, China.

So I called a UK supplier who advertises on eBay about these JASIC welders 5-year warranty, after checking it out with the importer this is what he said:

"it's a five year parts and labour warranty, you have to send the welder in to the Swindon service centre at your cost - they will then repair or replace it free of charge for five years from the purchase date and ship it back to you for free"

Can't be bad I reckon... I mean FIVE YEARS peace of mind - that's gotta be worth a few quid and gives me confidence that this might actually be reliable enough kit for the DIY-er for them to offer that sort of warranty in the first place.

I asked if a direct (not via eBay) purchase would save a few quid - they said it would and knocked about £70 quid off the price AND threw some stuff into the deal (TIG gloves, gas lens spares, helmet - they also offered rods).

Not sure how anyone can go wrong with this kinda deal?

Ask yourselfs do you 'really' need to do ali or just fancy the idea of doing it?

for similar money you could buy a real good and new/not used dc only machine full of features you could ever need with a long warranty from a uk based dealer.

It's a good point, most of my private work used to be DC only. But then I bought my first acdc some years back and it opened up so many doors. Without having one you won't miss it but after having one you won't be without it.

Yes very true, bought my first ac/dc machine probably 20 years ago,
didn't do much ali at the start but once the word gets round the jobs start to trickle in,
got a real good ac/dc machine now that has opened even more doors on what i can do with ali that my first ac/dc machine wasn't capable of.

ive just got my first ac/dc tig which is an older set with limited function but has already paid for itself with its first ali job welding up a rudder for a freinds boat. its always better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it...

Yes, better to be looking at it than for it! I specifically wanted to do aluminium so I bought and AC/DC unit but true to what Chevy2 says most of it's use is on steel & stainless although most of the paying jobs have been on alloy.

Take Hotrodder's V205 unit for example the DC only version is around £1900 new the AC/DC version he has is around £4000, and if you go water cooled your looking nearly 5 grand. They are the dogs B######s mind but it is a lot of extra £££ to shell out for that option.

I have the similar Miller version of the Lincoln that hotrodder owns,
those machines can be found cheaper if you look in the right places,

once you own one of these topend machines and use them to their potential you'll appreciate the extra expense which i'm pretty sure hotrodder will agree with.

I agree I also own a top end unit. Of course you can get them cheaper that was not my point my point was the AC facility can double the price of the machine. I'm pretty aware of the differences between a top end machine and a cheaper one. Mine is a fronius.
