CV joint help.

This is the drive shaft that connects the transfer box to the front axle on our old pel-job ed750 dumper. It's been expected to fail since we got it but as it was beyond repair (bearing cage missing a few bits) we just put up with the noise until it finally let go completely on the weekend:

Parts seem to be scarce and so expensive so written off being able to track down a direct pel-job replacement so am thinking that I maybe able to adapt a more common CV joint but am struggling a little finding one to match the splines... has anyone come across a driveshaft / cv joint with a diameter of 1.070" or 27.27mm with 25 splines:

The only marks I can see on it are DGO :

Neither of which throws anything promising on google.

Hoping someone here has some suggestions...

measure the bearings and cage you may get them from another cv joint which would be easier

Wouldn't the manufacturers have fitted one instead of the cost of a CV if it would work?

the other option is to modify the shaft as well then its a simple as picking a shaft from a car

I did try that thinking that likely internals might be more standard than splines but the two I tried were very close but just not quite. Think I'll ask a mechanic friend to keep every scrap CV joint he replaces - perhaps I might get lucky eventually.

Failing a quick fix finding a drop in CV joint I suspect this will be the next road to take - I'm not sure if the CV joint is necessary over a more standard universal joint TBH - it would definitely be easier to leave the CV out but might not allow enough movement - will have to look at this more closely.

Thwaites use a standard drive shaft with no CV

That's quite odd to have a universal joint on one end and a cv joint the other, as the universal joint speeds up and slows down whilst rotating and the CV is a constant velocity joint, can't see any reason why you can change it as long as the universal joint are in phase you couldn't use one, unless its a space saving idea

Taking a second look, I'm betting that the shaft has been welded up in a previous life to the cv joint, chop it off and make it a double uj shaft

Glad I'm not the only one wondering why there's a CJ joint and universal joint on the same shaft - It was beginning to get me thinking that it might have been a bodge job - as there have been a few others elewhere on the dumper that I have already put right. BUT.... I just stumbled across this: http://bagry.cz/cze/forum/stavebni_stroje/pel_job_ed750 - looks like it is standard and quite possibly a inherent weak spot as that one looks to have failed too.

would a double cardan joint be better ?

but the angle of said shaft will be the same at both ends so the angle cant be that bad or the uj would lock up so why the cv joint

The angle of the shaft yes but there is no guarantee the shaft meets the joint at the same angle at both ends. It's entirely possible the shaft is directly in line at one end not the other hence the CV joint one end

I think it was Cautrac I emailed shortly after getting the dumper and if memory serves me right it would have been the best part of £400 for the whole drive shaft by the time it was posted - hence why it was never replaced . It's still usable in 2wd for the odd light job we have about the house so I have a bit of time to sort something tidy out.

It will be trickery getting up the stairs in 2wd

I would be very tempted to get an old prop, make it fit and see how it goes, IMO it will work fine.

Try a CV reconditioners. They will rebuild yours.
