Gamble on a BOC Transweld AC 160

This is sitting in a yard not far from me tucked behind an old lorry,as far as i've been told its been there out in the elements for around 5 years.
Person whos suppose to own it is murder to get hold of,just wondering if its worth a silly punt at £40 as it stands,no leads,engine turns freely,the spark plugs out,engine oil is clean either that theres none in it,lol
Only thing that worries me,if and only if,its been outside in all weathers so i'm wondering what damage could there be on the electrickrey side





What you reckon guys? I'm not prepare to pay silly money if asked i may go to £55.
Any of you clever chaps out there know of this machine?

Don't know the machine but for £50 I'd take a punt and strip it and rebuild before testing.

I've got the same attitude as you,i'm not too worried about the engine side of things,fiddled about with B&S before,its the sparks side of the unit i'd be well and truly stuck on

I too would have it at £50, no hesitation. And no, the electric side is outside of my skill range too. I would probably end up asking on here if there was an electrical problem.

For £50 if you get the 11hp engine running it's worth it, you could run anything off that.

Dumb Question its an AC welder will i be limited to certain rods to use?

Not really, 6011-6013-7024-7016 should cover all the bases... And you could always put a rectifier on the output if you needed dc for anything

Its now mine,no,i wont tell you what i got it for,but lets say i'm one very happy bunny


On a quick look over oil looks quite clean

gave it a pull no spark,new plug ordered i'll start there first,tank was empty but very clean inside
First job is to get that engine fired up and running,loads of info from the web on that side of it,the rest will follow,well as you all know other projects are now put back(again)...........her indoors dont know yet,lol

Cant find much info on the net about this tool,if any of you chaps know more i'd be very happy to hear from you

IT LIVES

Last saturday i had a good look over it,couldn't get the engine to fire,no spark(even with new plug),did all the tests the B&S manuals have,and the main fault was that the ignition coil was goosed, from what i'd gathered reading up on this engine is quite a rare thing,but thats what it was.

Meanwhile,new coil was ordered,trust me finding a replacement wasn't easy esp with an engine made in 1982,plus this old beast is the old points and condenser type.

Anyway,new coil turned up today and got it all fitted along with new plug,everything all cleaned up ready to go,fingers crossed,very nervous,............2nd pull she fires,bingo

I wont bore you with the engine side of things to much or bombard you with photos of it as you've probably seen and done it before.
My main concern is the business end of it,the sparks side,i did run a meter across the mains outlets,on the 240v (blue socket) i got a reading of 190v,on the 110v (yellow socket) i got a reading of 105v.
Now i know they're not right but i have this feeling the engine isn't turning fast enough,yet to check this but is this the problem?
Didn't have time this evening to fiddle about with it more,but if you guys know,then by all mean share with me

Oh by the way,thought i'd take a few snaps of the inside of the sparking box end

Like to ask am i right about the revs needed to get the full readings out of this?
Also,you might see that the dinzes sockets are the smaller type 10-25,my leads are 35-50,i dont really want to go buy new leads/plugs etc is there a conversion plug you can get?

As regards the engine revs, get yourself one of these.

I use it all the time to set revs on lawnmower engines.

As for the dinse connectors, you can get adapters here.

But it works out cheaper to fit new larger panel sockets and a better job all round.

Think i'll stick with the adapters idea for now,big sockets look as they might cover over the settings/numbers,thinking of that i could drill out the holes a little further up

If you buy one of those tachos there is no off switch on it so you need to take out the battery when storing it!

In the midst of ordering one actually,thanks for that tip,just how much of that reflective tape do you get,and can you buy more if it runs out?
Further more,seem the 240 genny side works



Now thats the main test it boils the kettle
Also ran an grinder and a 1200w hoover both under load so happy there,haven't got any 110v tools but i'll borrow something from someone.
Main this is to sort out the welding side of things,think i'll go with adaptor plugs easy for me and saves hassle

Do you have a multimeter? Does it have a frequency (Hertz) measuring capability?
If you measure the frequency, you know the motor rpm too (I believe).

Plug in power meter will give you volts/hz/watts, very handy for checking generators.
