That is absolute genius! I wish to hell I had the sort of inspiration these bods do
One thing. If you were sat doing lots of short runs on a workpiece and didn't need it clamped for long, you could probably get away with just having the foot lever directly connected to the clamp i.e. no jack, and keep your foot rested on it to keep the workpiece in place while you weld.
I'd never use it enough to justify having it about but I'd love to make one to say I had and to play with it.

This is as far as i've got so far, I just need to make a table for it and reduce the travel of the ram because as it is its a bit violent.

Can you fit an air restrictor to the opposite end of the cylinder to control the speed?

No idea, i've got a few different air rams but this is the biggest the others weren't powerful enough to stop the ball from moving. I only need to restrict its movement so it drops enough to release the ball.

It seems to me you could use a hefty compression spring over a central bar and use a foot pedal lever that locks in a cut out to compress the spring when you want it locking rather than messing around with a hydraulic jack & two levers .
Or a perhaps a clutch off something about landrover size c/w release bearings there should be enough pressure there to lock the ball under most conditions.
