home made bead breaker

getting fedup of paying for punctures and -having to pay for getting tires off trailers ect to paint knocked this no frills or no spills one up in a couple of nights. I didn't realy have any measurments for one so drilled extra holes in the parts so its adjustable was bang on 1s time and works a treat with no effort to break beads just shotblasted -a -mini wheel and primed for painting it cost 12 quid to make from scrap available-

These work wonders meant to be temp to get you out of trouble but I've had one in my 6 months now I will get round to going a repair on it one day

Could have saved yourself a couple of nights work and all that metal by grabbing a piece of 2 x 2 angle and a big hammer...

None! I reckon that side by side I'll do them as fast with my bit of angle as he could position them under the machine, and that's without allowing for the odd very stubborn one which has you jumping up and down on bead breakers. Most small tyres go with one decent clout from the hammer, stubborn ones take a couple.

Mainly agricultural tyre fitters who use this as it beats any of the air/hydraulic breakers on all but the inaccessible and ultra stubborn tyres (remember they're done on the machine so mudguards etc get in the way) but it works just as well on anything, even down to 6" rims.

I was actually changing a tyre on my tractor yesterday and tried the angle and a sledgehammer but couldn't get the bead to shift! I think it could have been my technique or I wasn't hitting it hard enough but I ended up making some wedges and driving them in between the rim and the bead, seemed to work pretty well but wouldn't want to try it if I was reusing tyres or on rims that mattered if they were marked!

I really need one as I am doing a resto on my vw beetle and other cars and do all my steel wheel restoring my self and every time I need tyres removed I am charges £5 a wheel..

Can you make one for me if so how much posted please ?

Funnily enough I have some little-used 15" tyres I want to sell but retain the alloys, I was thinking I'd have to pay some tyre monkey to take them off for me.
Now, Brightsparks' place is about 5 mins away, company diesel...

I keep meaning to make something similar for my changer (Harvey Frost "Ace"). It's currently got a pneumatic one that I hate. As it happens when I did my training the manual one we learnt on was also a Harvey Frost "Ace" but it had a manual bead breaker similar to the one shown here.

I never have an issue with angle iron on ally rims tbh, even with tyres with 8-12 ply sidewalls.
