home made headstock hand tapping handle

after spending a night taking the lathe motor to bits to rewire it for my new chinese reversing switch when it arives i decided to make a hand cranked attachment for tapping its quick and saves having to reverse the motor all the time the shaft is slid in to the headstock mainshaft and is then nipped up tight on a taper simlar to a rawlbolt. the handle is removable so that the machine can be run without having to take the device out every time its not needed in conjunction with the tailstock die holder it makes the machine a lot more usable threading a lot of parts at once

its worth waiting for there a good machine for making small parts quickly rather than using larger machines all the time as long as u have all the gizmos for them

Be careful when you use it to detach it without fail. My first harrison wouldnt cut straight or repeat, and after much wailing the headstock was stripped out and the mandrel was split at the tail end. In the box in the foot we found a dividing plate and a expanding bush like yours but quite bent.
The synopsis was someone left it all set up and put the machine under power and crashed it big time, splitting a huge hollow mandrel... I had to scrap the lathe in the end.

having made the handle for the myford i made another sleeve for the harrison headstock

I made one of those for my little lathe out of a washing machine pulley, very useful for single point cutting short threads when your minimum speed in over 100rpm.

the reason for making the handle is it enables u to use the lathe for threading using taps and dies . threading with the machine running is 2 fast and needs to be reversed to clear the swarf from the tap or die . the headstock is disengaged from the gearbox and then can be cranked by hand. using a tailstock die holder bar can be threaded easily . all the machining can be done on one setting without removing the workpiece and having to reverse the motor on the lathe. it saves having to winding the chuck back and forth using the chuck key which is a pain and slow

The first two were Hugh, Pugh, I think. Yup, that's the one. Weird when you think about it. Nowadays, can barely remember something from five minutes ago, but can still remember that perfectly from thirty odd years ago.

lol the forum would be boring without a few funnies chucked in ive never seen camberwick green it was after my time the only thing i thought was il be ok if theres a powercut get the missus to hand crank it for mei can even engage the autofeed

That was shown on the Beeb until the early 80s. Marvellous TV. Along with Captain Pugwash, Magic Roundabout, The Clangers, and Trumpton: Pugh Pugh, Barney McGrew, Cuthbert, Dibble, Grub. I only recanted that this morning
