Identify this tool...

It was advertised as a Pickavant "cable squaring tool" but I'm pretty sure it's some kind of crimping tool. For £15 delivered I wasn't going to argue.

Was listed on eBay as a vice!

It is a lot bigger than I'd thought. A good eight inches long in the body so it's a massive tool. Clearly designed to be held in a vice, came with these jaws.

So come on then. What is it?

Could be, place in vice and pull on wire, drawing through the hole.

Most if not all of our brake related tooling was pickavant, it looks like it has a base to be held in a vice and I suggest a crimping tool for cable brakes, although the square shapes in the dies may prove I am wrong.

what's the purpose of the round part on the end above the nut flats

Is it not the sprung head of a shaft that goes through the nut and you belt it with a hammer to set the crimp, hard to tell from the photo's angle

Flaring tool used for brake lines was my first thought but I fail to see where the square holes could be used.

I was about to say that, an old car mechanic I know uses one for seedo cables...

Makes sense, heat up the cable, clamp down on it and belt the plunger to shape it, if that central bit is a plunger of course.

One of the bits I can see would form the square end for a speedo drive. The huge nut (about 40mm!) has a fine thread so can produce a massive force on its own but the central plunger also looks like it has seen the heavy end of a hammer.

Can't see what the flared round channels do though. Certainly not "squaring".

If I can find out what it is, I might be able to get some other bits for battery terminals, ferrules etc.

looks more like a cable wire stripper to me

Well, it's not. It's a cable staking tool for sure. The round/flared channels are for ferrules, the square/diamond for setting a cable and if I'm lucky, i might be able to find/make some dies for other crimp fittings.
