Had to assist a colleague in Milan earlier this week. The application was the overlay/cladding of Inconel 625 onto Steel Valves and Fittings that are used within the petro-chemical industry.

About 10-15mm beads. I thought I had taken some pictures of the column and boom set up. 
They have a manual welding torch, held by some brackets, which inturn are fixed onto a boom, they have a smaller motorised slide on the torch holder which brings the torch back and forth to acheive the weave. Very simple, but effective set up.
We fitted a small RC20 remote control onto the powersource which ment that the operator could start/stop the welding process aswell as increase/decrease the welding values and arc length.
They use 1.2mm Dia Inco 625 and 100% Ar.
I didn't see any machining done on site, so I assume that they send it out to be done.
In the back ground of one of the pictures you can just about make out a Sub-Arc set up. They use that for welding the big flanges onto the pipe fittings. Tig root and Hotpass and then about 5 runs of Sub-Arc.

I once did some Inconel cladding using sub arc and an oscillator. The beads were either 80 or 100 mm wide (I cant remember which). They were very flat and looked perfect. Unfortunately the weld metal had segregated so the properties were inconsistent.

That looks a similar job to the one me pal was doing a few years back with the Fronius...your mate Tony played Witness..
Set up virtually the same using Bode manipulator, there was a bit of hand work needed to finish which was done with the TIG....
Final machining was done 200 miles up country in Manchester, Biggish Firm name escapes me, whole works gone to Scotland now I gatther.....

Possibly too much heat, I dont really know. They needed the end result quickly so we didnt get time to investigate properly. We used DC neg and long stick out to minimise the dilution and get the best deposition rates so it was a bit untried. We changed to strip cladding and it was fine.

What's the duty cycle on a machine that does something like that and how fast is the chap in the background to leave a motion blur? A foundry I worked in used to make gate valves for the oil industry but they were cast in different grades of metal not coated after. Those look massive for ball valves. The biggest valve I fettled was big enough to walk through with a slight stoop.

It was Triangle Valves in Clay Cross, it shut down many years ago but there is a place there now called Mayfly containers where they weld all kinds of shipping containers and skips.

The average welding current was only about 180-210 amps so duty cycle not really a issue as its a 500 amp machine. The Sub Arc machine was powerered by 2 x Lincoln 1000 amp powersources, they was averaging about 500 amp welding current.
