Inner wheel arch painting, 2k solid colour

I've finished all the welding and prep work on my inner wheel arch and am now ready to paint.

I will brush on jotun 87, spray on gravitex, then had planned to base coat and 2k clear.

However I am now thinking just to go epoxy, gravitex and 2k solid colour.

Are there any downsides to using 2k solid colour?

Don't suggest raptor as its need for 3 coats, and one hour flash off times between coats makes it unsuitable for me.

I'd personally roller on the Jotun, more of an even finish compared to brushing it on. Which unless its sanded back will be seen in the final finish?

wont see anything under gravitex , brush is great to work the epoxy into gaps and seams etc

I used a 2k polyurethane over gravitex, tougher than acrylic, no issues that I've seen. It was Jotun Hardtop AS I think and SML paints coloured it for me.

Thanks guys, I'm heading over to the paint factor tomorrow morning and will ask for 2k polyurathane.

The painting took a lot longer than expected (an hour and a half), the paint was getting pretty thick towards the end and I used every last drop of the 300ml I made up.

Not only will the gravitex cover up the brush strokes, no one except me will ever see it once the wing is back on.

I picked up some 2K colour this morning the paint shop and data sheet says it polyurathane acrylic, so be it.

Gravitex now on and no sign of brush strokes.

I have done my repaired wheel arches in black Gravitex. I was very impressed how easy it was to apply, even with a 24l compressor. Went on smoothly with very little overspray and gave a nice, even, slightly textured finish.

I didn't want to start up the compressors at 9 o'clock this morning so decided to try a small area with a brush, it looked fine so I did the entire section.

Now time to put the subframe back in turn the car round and start on the other side.

Is the blue solid or metallic?

Yes it is, the original wheel arch colour was a slightly lighter (but had been sprayed over with a bitumen type underseal) solid blue, so I decided to go with this solid as it is closer to the body colour.

Too late now but if you wanted to use base and clear (if you'd already bought the paint for the body for example) then you can mix the base and some clear with hardener. Gives a bit less glossy finish but ok for wheel arches etc.

I think they spray easier with less orange peel but still a good tough coating.

For anyone interested here are the horrors I found when I took off the other wing last night.

I recon that's a couple or three months work for me to get it looking like the other inner wing I just finished.......trying to stay positive.

I got the offside finally completed last night, a hell of a lot of fabrication and welding to the bulkhead, driver floor, inner wing, inner sill, outer sill and jacking point, I think it took about 60 hours over the last two months.

Now looks like this.

If it's just for underneath, ask for commercial 2k, it's a fraction of the price of auto2k. I paint Landrovers, tractors etc all over with it. Only down side for me is it's too glossy. But as tough as old boots and covers fantastic. I think the stuff I use is Lechler Acritop.

I used to use the old guy in Harrison Park in Edinburgh but he is dead and gone now.
