Just wondered what you use

Just wondering what you use for holding your welding rods. Mine'll be out in the shed which is OK for the moment, but less so when the weather turns damp.

I've been thinking of plastic pipe [rhone, drainage, waste etc] cut to length, but the problem seems to be sourcing end caps to seal off the end.

I know proprietary 'quivers' are available, but I'm too mean to pay the asking price if I can make an acceptable alternative.......

What do you guys use?

I normally buy my TIG rods by the handful so I've never gotten a plastic holder you'd normally get with a full pack. I made these up instead, one is for TIG and the other for MMA. Cost was a few quid each:



They're waterproof, hard wearing and easy to use with gloves on. Here's the bits you make one from:

The white TIG one has a couple of 20mm conduit pieces wedged in. This keeps my 304 and 316 rods separate from the mild ones. I'm making another as I'm doing more TIG work and want to keep more rods in stock.

I can give you the part numbers from Toolstation/ Wickes if you'd like but really the last picture's all you need

Look for rodding point or rodding eyes for soil pipe. A length of pipe & a rodding point on each end.

I found 2 plastic ammunition cases on a boot sale years ago, o ring sealed with screw caps, just the job. About 100 mm dia & the length of a 3.2 mm rod. I don't know what went in them though.

I would think your right. Got a carrying handle on the side. Cost me a pound, would have cost 10 times that to make.

I think I have one of those somewhere still. Another one went to the house clearance from my Dad's workshop the other week. If I can find mine someone can have it for the cost of postage. I keep all my rods under the bed these days!

No problems pal. They work well for me but I suppose if you did a load of MMA (I don't) the capacity is a bit low (about 80 x 2.5mm rods). Still they're so cheap you can just make more

The fact they look like pipe bombs is mildly concerning but I don't use them in public so it'll be fine

I found two - they are a bit dusty but seem OK otherwise - there are even some rods of very dubious quality in one of them!

PM me if you want them - it might be a couple of weeks before I can post them though - I'm doing Paris-Brest-Paris on my bike and need to focus on being ready for that!

I bought 5 kg of ER70s6; , why didn't I get a fancy tube. Yours look good though, I'll buy some tubing soon.

Normally you get a nice plastic pack that's reusable (although they're easily damaged I find) but I was picking up some Böhler rods a while back and those were in a cardboard tube so even good brands don't always net you one.

A lot of countries dont allow plastic packaging. Germany have strict laws and whilst its possible they pay a high price to get rid. So the metal basket and the cardboard tube are more popular in these countries. I think ESAB only sell wire on metal baskets and carboard tubes these days.

Youve all seen the REZY sign on boxes

So if you get plastic tubes save em, they will become more and more scarce.

I was picking up some stainless filler rods and saw the cardboard tube and thought "ugh, these are going to be mince" and was a bit surprised when I saw the brand. Nice to see plastic not being used for everything.
