MIG Welding Critique

Hello from the US! This is the best DIY Mig Welding site I have been able to find, so I'm hoping to learn from you folks.

Thoughts, tips, or comments on these welds? I'm still trying to bring up my level of consistency with my welds. All of these were done with a backhand/pull method using a zig-zag pattern on a Hobart 175. 1/4" Plate brackets welded to a front axle (0.375" thick) with 0.35" Wire and shielding gas.

They look neat! That last one looks like it might not have penetrated far enough - it looks like it's only on the top of the plate from the picture.

And you're right - this is without doubt the best welding forum out there.

They look like perfectly good welds Stephen. Any reason why you pulled the weld instead of pushed?

The penetration on the bottom fillet looks ok. You wouldn't normally expect the weld on that joint to run right through. On a butt weld, it should penetrate fully.

Not sure about your .35" wire though...

The welds look decent enough, but it seems like you're dragging them somewhat. Try lowering the amperage and travelling slower, also it's usually good practice to travel forwards instead of back. You tend to get better penetration, even though you can't keep as good an eye on your weld pool, but it's all down to practice.

If you can get your hands on some anti-spatter that should save time on removing it too.
